A Bowerbird and RoseA Poem by elephantThis was inspired by the bird and the bandThere the bowerbird hops with a rose in his beak He's so black and drab he must dance and show for her So he listens to the forest and the caws for him And so he lines his bower with skeletons This ugly bird thoughtfully decorates his hearth With the forest shells scattered around the dirt And shedded feathers of other brighter birds He performs his dance with a dead rose and he shows for her Persuading his seed and inviting her to fly with him So he hangs the pretty dead leaves on his home of twigs and dirt Will he dream and does he treasure her? After his dance for love around the forest dirt ends This male bowerbird drab and black Decorates his nest with insect skeletons Brightly feathers and holds a dead rose in his beak For her loving caw he dances with desperate zeal And when the shows done they waltz To their death and decorate and soar together In their forest in their sky till they finally sleep forever
