The Storm

The Storm

A Poem by Matt Hargenrader
"

A look at the “storm” of emotions behind heart break.

"
It’s funny how we forget
All of the mundane and insignificant details of our lives
Like a sudden breeze
There for a moment, then whisked away forever
And yet another breeze will come
But much like the first
It too will forgetfully fade into the past

Though what’s most funny to me
Is the things we wish to forget do not fade as easily
The pain
The suffering
The regret
You see, a lackluster conversation with a friend dissipates by the day’s end
Yet the memories of a heartbreak burn for a lifetime

Memory is an enigma
Weeks go by, and not once have they crossed your mind
Then a gentle breeze passes
Only this one carries a decade of baggage
There across the street, you see them for the first time in years
Now the pain and suffering resurfaces
And this time you’re engulfed by a twister

Years go by
Some breezes dwindle while others form storms
Some nights you’ll wake from a dream in tears
How do they always find their way back?
But fear not,
For after every storm,
There is a new day with promise in store
