The Space Between

The Space Between

A Poem by Matt Hargenrader

The universe is infinite
My mere existence is finite
Father Time presses forcefully against my back
Mortality is rather a curse than a blessing

Many question their purpose
Others live shielded by ignorance
The truth frightens the weak-minded
Two pills lie on the table: one blue and one red

I feel more alone than ever
My soul is as empty as space
Waiting for something to fill the void
Yet no light can rid its darkness

A young woman lies in her bed
In a neighboring universe, perhaps
Pondering her existence as well
She wonders if anyone else can relate

Little does she know I feel her pain
We are far more alike than she'll ever know
Though Dreaded Distance is too great
Our lights will not reach each other in this life

But it comforts me to imagine
There is an unspoken connection
Although she will not be alive for my light to reach her
She falls asleep knowing it is traveling to her anyway
