Visions of Swans

Visions of Swans

A Poem by mathiasthom

Rustic beauty hides beneath
a coat of arms known as 'despair,'
Up some spiral staircase
attached nondescriptly to a wall,
A cold, forgotten mirror

Gaze into this reflection,
if one must,
Bitten tongues ripe
with the taste of rust

Another ugly duckling
lost in prophetic visions of swans
with broken necks,
leaden with the stench of death...

Once was a beating heart
pumping with life,
but hope has faded

and been utterly forgotten...
