But You Did...

But You Did...

A Poem by mathiasthom

Never was one for school work,
but you were...
Getting through each day unmarked
by cretins with tunnel vision,
It was nothing but a prison
But the light at the end
was the only salvation,
feeling liberation,
and Life had only begun...

But you were steadfast with determination
nothing you would ever lack,
or stop you from reaching your goals,
I watched your back...

First it was decided a word processor
would be a treasured gift,
Imagine the look of surprise
on your face
running up the stairs,
This huge wrapped package on your bed

I know I shouldn't have,
but I thought you were a worthy recipient
Going much further
than I would ever dare

Then it was a few more necessities,
like a phone and an answering machine,
Cutlery and a tv,
Now you won't feel so alone,
It'll be more like home,
out on your own...

'Thank you', was all I ever heard
With empty enthusiasm behind each word
Wasn't going anywhere with my life,
But you were...

Fast forward to before your wedding day
You asked me to create a gift
to put on display
But instead, it was rejected
to my complete dismay,
and an unappreciative groom
who apparently hates gays...

Had enough,
so I walked away
an apology to soothe the burn,
It never was forth coming,
Out the door and running,
Didn't show a display of emotion,

But you did...
