A Year LaterA Chapter by Mary GreenwellChapter Ten It was a year later and the first day of school. “Come on Anna!” Jacob called through the door, “You’re going to make both of us late.” “I don’t care.” I shrugged coming out still brushing my hair. “Let me…” he smiled but instead of brushing he just played with it. “Lexi is going to kill you.” I laughed in the car as I finally finished combing the tangles out of my curls. “For?” “Making me late.” “I made you late?” he checked. “Well I’m not going to say that it was my fault.” I laughed before kissing him and jumping out of the car, “See you tonight.” I promised through the window but he reached for my face and cradling it he kissed me again. “I love you.” He whispered and I smiled running away. He didn’t tell me that he loved me much and so I’d kept a list and I ran to my locker to write the date and time in my locker. It was exactly the tenth time in a year. “He told her again.” Pearl laughed coming up and I smiled turning to her. She’d become my best friend through the year and I couldn’t help but be happy around her. “Tonight Jacob’s taking me out.” “You two are constantly together… when you live with your boyfriend you don’t go on dates.” “You do on special days.” Tyler told her grabbing Lisa and making her scream. They’d broken up but they were still best friends and secretly we all had bets on when they’d get back together. “How was your first year in Mystic Falls?” “I’d say all in all… great.” I smiled. “Wow… rampaging family…” Elliot left off with that seeing my mood drop drastically. “It’s not you.” I promised and they all followed my sight to the new history teacher. “Ilia.” Elliot whispered. “Well everybody warned me that she wouldn’t just stay away.” I sighed straightening, “Come on Pearl let’s go see how my doppelganger is at teaching.” “You aren’t going in there.” Elliot shook his head. “Where else do you expect me to go?” I questioned when nobody had an answer I grabbed Pearl and we walked into history as the bell rang. “She looks like Bell…” the whispers shot across the room. “Do you think they’re related…? There’s no other explanation…” “Anabelle Lee?” Ilia asked and I nodded. “You start us out on our icebreaker.” “I’m Anabelle Lee but everybody calls me Bell. I’ve lived here a year.” I said simply careful not to give her anymore information than she already had and I saw her get angry when she saw that. “I’m Pearl Seymour and I’m a… Senior.” Pearl finished when I shook my head at her. “Oh stop a second…” Ilia smiled as the phone rang. “Anabelle you are checking out.” I bit my lip as I walked to the office to find Jacob. “You’re the one that chose to go into that classroom.” Jacob shrugged in the car knowing that I was ticked. “I can’t graduate without history!” I snapped. “You have three credits of history I checked. It’s enough.” He stopped the car and turned to me, “For me don’t take this risk.” He begged, “I can’t have a repeat of last year.” I nodded slowly and he sighed pulling me into his arms, “Thank you.” He whispered kissing my head. “You realize that I only agreed because I didn’t want to argue?” I checked. “I figured but… I don’t really care the motivation as long as you don’t risk it.” He smiled. “When will you sing again?” I whispered moving to the middle. “As soon as you want me to.” He whispered in my ear and then he started singing ‘God Gave Me You’ to me. “I love you.” I promised. “Where do you want to go?” He requested. “Can we go visit Daddy? I haven’t seen him in forever and you’ve never met him.” I’d always gone with Tyler to check in at home before but I wanted Jacob to meet Daddy. “That would actually be the perfect thing to do today.” He smiled starting to drive. “Don’t mention Shia.” I reminded Jacob once again as he pulled in front of Daddy’s house. “Granny Lee is the only one that needs to know that Shia caused this mess.” “I know, Ana.” He promised giving me a soft kiss before getting out. “Anabelle.” Andrew smiled. “I didn’t come back for you.” I snapped at him, “So leave me alone.” “Doesn’t somebody feel strong…” I flinched when he lifted his hand in a motion meant to slap me. I heard Jacob lose it and snarl dangerously at him. “Anabelle?” Granny Lee asked. “Andrew is just being Andrew and Jake is just being the same overprotective Jake… that I love so much.” I finished when Jake turned warningly to me and he half-smiled at me. “Andrew, stay away from my Anabelle Lee.” Granny Lee ordered then turned to me, “Anabelle Lee bring Jacob with you and visit your father.” I nodded eagerly and grabbed Jacob pulling him inside. “Daddy?!” I called inside as Jacob finally relaxed and hooked me into his side. I reached up and took his hand in mine. “Anabelle…” Daddy smiled looking me up and down. “This is Jacob.” I smiled moving away and hugging Daddy tightly. “You haven’t hugged me since… you’ve seen your mother haven’t you?” “Not the one you fell in love with.” I whispered carefully. “Where?” he asked. “You can’t go there… they already almost killed Ana.” Jacob spoke for me. “It was mostly Benjamin.” I whispered and Jacob turned me into his chest. “Shh… it’s okay… you’re with me.” Jacob assured me when my tears started. I hadn’t told anybody but I still felt Benjamin checking in throughout the days. It was getting stronger and I knew soon I’d have to tell. “Let’s just sit down and eat some of Granny Lee’s cookies.” Daddy whispered and Jacob quickly sat keeping me hidden in his lap, “So Jacob… you’re a vampire.” Daddy started. “Yes.” Jacob answered shortly. “Be nice.” I warned from his chest. “I’m sorry Ana.” Jacob promised but like always it was only an apology for how he was with no promises of change. I sat and listened to Daddy and Jacob talk and then it started to get late. “We better head home.” Jacob whispered in my ear and I nodded getting up and hugging Daddy and Granny Lee. “Don’t let him go after her.” I begged Granny Lee and she nodded. “You need to fast, child.” She whispered but I shook my head. “I’ve got it under control.” I promised sitting up but then Benjamin checked in catching me off guard and I could see everything I was doing, as he took over, but I couldn’t stop myself. I walked over to the knives and immediately took one out and stabbed myself. © 2013 Mary Greenwell |
