Chapter Nine

“Why me?” I whispered but I pulled away quickly from him at the kick.

“What was that?” Jacob whispered putting his head on my stomach.

“Benjamin…” I whispered feeling the tears fall again. “Hitting wasn’t the worst he did… please Jacob…” I begged when he pulled away.

“Ana…” He whispered sadly, “I have to find a witch.”

“You can get Pearl as soon…” I trailed off as I had to fight again, “You don’t get him!!” I screamed angrily at Benjamin and heard Jacob talking to Elliot and Lexi but I couldn’t stop fighting long enough to understand them.

“He’s my baby.” Benjamin pulled me back in, “Jacob will never be able to give you children… give in and I’ll give you as many…”

“No Ana!” Jacob’s voice broke through and I found my hand almost on Benjamin. I moved it onto Jacob’s chest and his arms surrounded me making me find myself and Benjamin leave.

“I’m sorry.” I whispered, “I didn’t mean to…”

“You’re still safe you just have to fight…”

“I AM FIGHTING!!!!!” I roared, “I can’t fight any harder!!!” I screamed a little less loud and then my fear came out in a whisper, “His pull is becoming stronger and stronger.”

“The baby.” Elliot told me, “You are growing a stronger more powerful Benjamin…” I screamed as the baby kicked me again.

“Even my baby hates me…” I moaned but clung to Jacob when I felt Benjamin check in.

“I’m sorry, Ana, but we have to get rid of him. If we don’t I’ll lose you.” Elliot and Lexi left as Jacob’s pain came through.

“It’s my baby, Jake.” I begged, “Find a way to save him… make him love…”

“He can’t love the innocent.” Jacob whispered softly. “I’ll find a way to give you a baby that can, though.” He begged and I nodded after a few minutes knowing I was putting everybody in the world in danger keeping my baby, “I’ll get Pearl and her Grandma.” He nodded but I shook my head.

“He’s mad.” I begged and Jacob laid back down holding me close.

“Elliot?” He asked softly and Elliot walked in but flinched at the pain that filled the room. “Call Pearl and Ms. Seymour.” Elliot nodded and left but I flinched.

“You see him right?” I whispered looking at Benjamin. I hadn’t even felt his pull this time.

“Fight Ana… fight with everything you have…” Jacob’s voice came and I knew that Benjamin was still invisible to him.

“You don’t deserve my baby.” Benjamin said simply and then left but I came back and felt empty.

“He took the baby.” I whispered feeling horrible because I was happy.

“You should feel better soon then.” Jacob smiled some and then whispered, “Sleep now… dream a peaceful dream.” He started to sing softly and soon I fell asleep to a part of him I didn’t know.

“Hey Jake?” I asked as he walked out of the bathroom. I sighed as my imagination took over and I didn’t feel any pull.

“Ana?” He laughed.

“Shh…” I whispered enjoying my pictures.

“You have to get ready.” He smiled holding me close to him.

“Okay!” I smiled excitedly pulling away and running to Lexi. “I want to make Jake…” I trailed off trying to come up with the words.

“Crazy?”

“No… more… I want to look so good that he forgets everything that’s happened lately.” She smiled and started running through her closet.

“Do you want to dress up for Halloween?” She requested, “It’s pretty big here.”

“Sure.” I nodded and she pulled out a Spanish dancing dress.

“This… he’s always had a thing for a dancer.”

“I can’t dance…” I laughed when Jacob pulled me into him and started dancing.

“Hmmm…” He sighed and then pulled me in close, “1…2…3.4” he started to count.

“Jacob…” I whispered when he just started to softly sing to our dance, “… we’ll be late for school.”

“I don’t care.” He shrugged and I just put my head into his chest as he continued to sing even though I had stopped dancing.

“Why are you singing so much lately?” I asked him that night while we sat on the couch. We’d made it to school around lunch and as soon as school was over he started to sing again switching back and forth between English and Italian.

“I’m happy.” He shrugged stopping in the middle of a stanza in ‘Life Turned Her That Way’.

“Then why are you singing songs like that?”

“They remind me of you.” He smiled pulling me in tighter.

“You haven’t left a footprint.” I corrected laying on him.

“I didn’t write the song.” He shrugged.

“Who did? I’ve never heard it.”

“A singer long ago… country…” He smiled and then just started singing a song I did recognize because Daddy would play the 1950’s Rock songs all the time in the house.

“I like tha…” I trailed off on his finger and he just kept singing to me. “I still love you.” I reminded him when he got to that verse in ‘Teen Angel’.

“You better never kill yourself either.” Tyler commented walking in, “I didn’t know you could sing.”

“He used to sing for a living.” Elliot said and I looked into the corner wondering silently how long he’d been there, “He hasn’t sung like that since…” He trailed off but I felt Jacob’s head shake.

“Since?” I requested.

“It’s not important just know that you brought my music back to me.” Jacob whispered kissing my forehead. I realized suddenly that I’d told him, for the first time that I loved him and not only had he not said it back but we’d never actually kissed.

“Eli?!” Alena yelled and I smiled.

“We’re in here!” I called back looking in between Elliot, Jacob, and Tyler.

“You didn’t…” Lexi begged looking at me, “You brought her up.”

“Who?!” I snapped, “I have no idea what’s going on here.” I pouted when Jacob turned back to me and calmed me down.

“It’s not important. It was in the past.” He promised but I just looked at him.

“I’m refusing to leave this spot until you tell me.” I decided.

“I’m not telling you about it.” He warned me and I just put my face in his chest.

“Sheesh are you two ever going to have your first fight?” Pearl asked.

“Not if I can help it.” I shrugged and looked up at Jacob, “I’m sorry. It’s obvious the topic is painful I shouldn’t have…”

“Just hush.” He sighed and suddenly I found myself having my first kiss. I pulled myself closer to him and eagerly just kissed him. “Now come dance with me.” He requested and I just smiled letting him pull me up.

“I think you have finally silenced her.” Lisa laughed at the dance looking at me and Jacob. He’d just let us walk off the dance floor seeming to have given up on teaching me to dance.

“No…” I shook my head, “I’m just completely happy.”

“I would’ve kissed you the second I met you if I knew that’s all it would take.” Jacob whispered in my ear but I pulled away.

“Go sing.” I smiled excitedly, “Sing for me and for Elliot.” He smiled letting me know just how much singing meant to him and how big of an event had to have happened to stop him from singing.
