Chapter ThreeA Chapter by Mary GreenwellChapter 3 “Help me out real quick then.” He whispered in my ear and when he looked at me, he realized it was going to take a lot to get me to do anything, “I bet you can’t get Mr. D-day to let class out early.” He challenged. “You’re going to let class out.” I told Mr. D-day and I felt Ben’s power coming through me too but I did not say anything just fell back into Ben when I was done. “Class dismissed.” Mr. D-day said and we left quickly. “I have blood in my truck come on.” Ben nodded, “It’s human it should make it where you’re ready for next period.” “Joy, next period.” I smiled on our way back to the school but he walked close to me afraid I was not ready emotionally or physically but he thankfully did not touch me as I asked. “Relax I just got mad and Mr. D-day was too close and after I use my powers like that…” I trailed off when Veronica and Cole got to us. “You used your powers and Ben had to find you blood and you didn’t send him to find me.” Cole turned on me angrily. “I’m fine Dr. Benjie did a very wonderful job.” “He gave you human blood Lily. We both know how you get when you have human blood you should go home.” “I’m fine Cole. I’m not going home.” “Why not?” “Because there’s no telling how much longer we’re going to be in a wonderful human school.” “Yeah I heard in Ben’s mind.” He nodded. “What’s going on?” Veronica asked me and not Cole no matter how imprinted they might be I was the best friend. “The reason I lost my temper this morning was Mr. D-Day told me he was going to get me expelled… that after Ben left class I was going to leave to go to the principal’s office and meet Piper and Leo and be expelled.” “That’s not even in his power, Lily.” Ethan said coming up. “We all know the school would be all too willing to throw all of us out though.” Poppy said. “It can’t happen.” Veronica shook her head. “Don’t worry V I’ll just keep getting out of Mr. D-Day’s class when he threatens it until the end of the school year. I am not leaving you. You’re my first human best friend since Kali was human.” I smiled pushing Cole away so I could hug her and she pushed Cole away again when he tried to replace me to keep me close and I stuck my tongue out at him while forcing myself to get used to having all of the power touching her gave me in my system. “Ha best friend replaced you!” I smiled when I was better and everybody looked at me worriedly, “It’s not the start of moodiness you guys I’m just happy that I’ve got my best friend still.” I promised but if I was being honest, it was really hard to stay happy and Cole’s eyes looked the most worried because he could see the fight on my face. “We’ll see you guys at lunch.” I promised as we walked into second not even Cole would come meet us between periods until lunch now. “Are you doing okay, Lily?” Cole asked as we walked out of second. “I’ve got everything under control Cole I haven’t even had to fight my talent.” “She’s right.” Veronica nodded we had agreed not to tell him that I hadn’t been able to fight it I had taken it out on some innocent boys backpack and she only knew because she’d seen me concentrating too hard on the backpack. “What happened?” Cole asked reading it on one of our faces. “Nothing,” We said together. “Now I know something really did happen.” “You’re right…” Veronica said. “I decided that I was going to do a French manicure on my toes tonight at this really cute pedicure spot I found while I was out last night.” I interrupted quickly. “You didn’t Lily…,” he begged. “No I didn’t.” I said defensively and I was being truthful I did not use my talent on anybody like he was thinking. “She used it on somebody’s backpack.” Veronica exploded. “Some best friend!!!!” I yelled and took off at vampire speed to my locker knowing that Cole would not leave Veronica not for me not anymore. When we had been imprinted, he would leave anybody but now that he had imprinted on her he would stay with her and for the first time I was thankful. “She was worried.” He said beside me. “Go back to your girlfriend.” I snapped. “No because you need to go home we both know human blood is going to make this whole day harder on you.” “No you are making this whole day harder on me.” I snapped and then took off again. “I’m about to call Leo.” He said keeping up easily. “You’re about to blow us.” “We’re about to be expelled again.” “Don’t tell your girlfriend that.” “She’s your best friend.” “Not anymore.” “Don’t say that Lily.” “My best friend would have kept her promise.” “Unless she knew I could help you.” “Nobody can help me.” “I used to help you.” “You used to be imprinted to me too but look at us now we hardly talk. Things change.” I snapped and he stopped. I kept going even though I knew I had crossed the line I had hurt him. I had never wanted to do that. It was just too much work today though he could not be around me because he was not imprinted on me and my talent might work on him now. When I sat down at lunch, I did not even bother going through the line I was just getting in a worse mood as the day went on, “You need to get lunch you’ll break your family’s act.” Veronica told me. “Well seeing as you aren’t eating and you’re human skipping one lunch isn’t going to kill me.” I snapped at her. “Sheesh you need to talk to Cole if he helps with the mood swings.” “No he makes them worse.” I snapped feeling like crying when I looked up and saw the hurt on Cole’s face. I got up and walked over to another table full of our friends that did not know the secret. “Hey Hope can I sit here?” I asked pointing to the seat next to her. I figured if I sat at a table away from all of my problems for a while than I might feel better. “Sure what’s wrong?” “Kalila is being a pain in my neck.” I sighed. “Hey, Lily, do you mind coming over here and making up with your twin she’s being a downer to the whole table now?” Madison asked having heard what I was using as an excuse but she was really letting me know my act that everything was okay was being ruined. “Of course.” I sighed getting up and waving to my friends in apology. They all smiled understandingly and then I sat at the family table with all of them staring at me. “What I had to ask Hope a question?” I asked but I saw that Cole was not even listening just tracing Veronica’s hand so I gave up. To anybody else it would look like he was just content but to somebody that knew him as well as I did they would know it was something he only did when he was thinking. Otherwise he would stare at you not into space and he would usually trace features of your face and tell you how much he loved you for content no this was thought and it wasn’t my business what he was thinking about so I just let my mind trail away. I got up as soon as it was okay to do so and ran out heading into the bathroom first washing off my face trying to get all the thoughts that had come to my mind out and then I walked out to see Cole. “Can I talk to you, Lily?” he asked. “Not right now.” I shook my head but then I saw Veronica and I took off at vampire speed not caring if anybody saw me just caring that I got to her. “What’s wrong?” I asked. “I saw you talking to Cole he didn’t tell you?” “No I saw you and ran off.” I shook my head steering her into the bathroom. Most people were still eating so we had the bathroom to ourselves. “I told him I loved him and he said I love you too Lily-be.” She cried into my shoulder and I tensed I felt horrible because I wished I had been there. It’d been so long since those words had come out of his mouth and even if it was just a slip I couldn’t help but wish I had been there to hear them. © 2013 Mary Greenwell |
