Pink Floyd Played My Room

Pink Floyd Played My Room

A Poem by Rosalind Gale

Bloody cankerous psyche, shifting from one

Black lap of scrutiny, piercing,

To the lucid shriek of the altar -

To the sluice.

Flooded love's abuse, wave after wave.

My levee cracked, breached

By this glorious torrent,

Swilling along

His murderous maelstrom,

Of deplorable words, kicking, drowning.

All grown up and left home.

Oh to breathe easier

As I did when I was young and loved time -

And believed in road-makers,

And held sketch pads with lessons on how

To draw nondescript faces

And still life. And I would see concerts in my bedroom.

Before the cuckoo-man took me,

Before my vanes lost their power

And their will.

Before almost everything

Got killed.

I was as strange when I was young as I am now...Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald, Wynton Marsalis, Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, Albert King...those are the like that played my room. I was raised in a very strict Christian household, and rock was Satan's favorite tool to steal the souls of the young. I had a Walkman with headphones, however and I could listen and listen to Lucifer's lewd lyrics inconspicuously. In those days, I dreamed of moving to New Orleans and being a street musician. But that was before the "cuckoo woman" took me, (my ex wife; thought I should clarify) "Before almost everything got killed." Bloody hell, Rosa, you get better with each new write. This one took us for a ride that split the space/time continuum. From our idealistic youth to our jaded, disillusioned adulthood...

This is macabre, illustrative, nostalgic, and so fluently described. I read the first stanza again and again, drinking up every line as I allowed the enigmatic flow of it to take me over as I fancied myself caught in the web of your moment. It's true, with each write you present to us, they seem to gather more brilliance and vibrancy and cut-throat reality as they progress. The intuitive rawness of this is staggering in its accuracy of youth clad in counter culture and screaming at the universe for answers that in all probability- may never be answered. We are so alike, our nature humming on the same wavelength, sometimes sublime, sometimes verging on lunancy; always a world apart. This makes me reminisce of my wayward youth, I too, was always passionate for Pink floyd- still am...

Before the cuckoo-man took me,
Before my vanes lost their power
And their will.
Before almost everything
Got killed.

What more is there to say? This is wonderful. I am so enamored of your poetry, you make me feel comfortably numb. ;) Well done, Rosa.

This poem is truly awesome...I Love Pink Floyd...and your meloncholy wording is reminiscent to their music...I use to get high listening to the Darkside Of The Moon floating with my thoughts back in my younger days, um, I mean I was high on life...I miss concept albums like theirs...I imagine everyone going through their personal journey putting Pink Floyd music on experiencing the delight...the song 'Numb' comes to mind when David Gilmour wailing the wa wa guitar singing the child is gone...a really deep poem...Thank you for sharing.

wouldn't it be great - to step back to that point before we made all the grown up decisions that grown - ups have to make, that wonderful time in life when you feel empowered to protest loudly and make your voice count. Beautifully written although very sad. One of these days you are going to write a happy poem - I can feel it's on its way.

This is a heart ride it is. The sadness and then the innocent stanza about your sketch pads and your music...then that last line like a blow to the throat. So sad...you make feeling sad sing.
