Closer to the Equator

Closer to the Equator

A Poem by Maryam Mottahedeh

Closer to the Equator

It’s a question of want

A question of value

It’s a question of time

And a question of knowing

Of that which keeps me bound

And that which springs as wonder

The cycling of seasons

And contemplation of old ideas

Question of passing through the gates

Crossing to the other side

Closer, to the equator perhaps

Closer to the taste unknown

The place where there is more water

I want to swim in the current of new ideas

To the place where old habits are made a spring board

Closer to that place

Closer to the beat of the equator

It’s a question of desire

The move to a new habitat

Where advertisements are seldom

Where the weight of insecurities

Need not slow down my raft

I am headed to the equator

It’s a question of time

Of courage perhaps

Where insecurities obscure not

The vision in the chest of the migrating birds

Where their need for security weighs not their wings

To fly to the depths of the unknown

Simply by the knowing of one’s own heart
