A Promise

A Promise

A Poem by Maryam Mottahedeh

A Promise

After the rain

The cleansing of mother

And the bloom of newness in the spring of eyes

I see

Like the green and the naturalness of the mountains

Like that of real clouds

True as the autumn breeze

That something

Has been left unharmed

That something a promise

An oath of the eternal

Pure

Beyond the madness of pollution

Agendas of population extermination

Beyond the cries of neglected wounds

Their feast to the vultures of corruption

Governing throughout time

To the depths of the dwelling places

Of minds and hearts

Today is a reminder

Of oxygen filling my lungs

Of the untamed purity

Crystalline and eternal

Through this mortal body

Gifted a glimpse
