Away with Excuses

Away with Excuses

A Poem by Maryam Mottahedeh

Away with Excuses

A busy man has an excuse

But it’s his lack of interest

That makes me sad

Makes me wonder why

Makes my strings loose

Let me not unravel

I don’t want to add excuses

To numb my pain

Not sure if I even want to know why

Perhaps I’ll turn away

My wishful thinking

Not as sweet as yesterday

What shall I say

What words would erase

Or reconstruct anew this present day

The little something is still there

The green seed that sprouted there

Will it grow anyway

Let me not water it with tears

My heart already too heavy

My eyes want to close and rest up today

So that my reflection can again

Be filled with cheer

Even on a rainy day
