Something In Me

Something In Me

A Poem by Maryam Mottahedeh

Something In Me

There is no escape

From FEMA's concentration camps

From the new world order

Something in me has to die

Before destiny’s call

Before

The bell of night

Something in me

Has to die

In broad daylight

Something in me

The thing that grasps

In all its hopes

And all the fear

Something

The image in the mirror has to die

The thing that keeps the count

The thing wanting so much more

Holding on

There is so much to let go of

Yet it is something in me that needs to die

The death of future

In the memory of now

That this very breath

This very moment may be the last

To do the right thing

Without a past

Something in me needs to die

Death of the unknown

Connecting dots and strings

To that which is doomed

Why not

Why not

Let it go and die

To find my body a gift

That which has already been doomed

And are not all my desires

In the play ground I play

Games, games, games

Of fear and desire

Of hope and aggression

So much so much bitterness to let go of

So much sweet comfort

Something

Something in me needs to die
