Lantern

Lantern

A Poem by Maryam Mottahedeh

Lantern

Here fearless I sit

Clear headed

At last some of the fog

Has dissipated with the whistle of time

Here I see the tunnel and the ground

Perhaps it’s no surprise

To find this earth cracked

The vision of my hand

In sleeves of the soul rolled up

Yet another incarnation

Plowing fields

Another path to sew

But not yet

The dark of night awaits

And the weeds of land, long abandoned

The night is long

Will the moon cry out compassion

Through the torn layers of the fog

Will it light my way

Will I sweat blood

Fearless I open the window of what’s to come

It seems I gave my hand away

In this acceptance

There are no rocks

The stepping stones of what may come my way

And what will I pass along the way

Will I shed that heavy yesterday

Will the fields know my name

Will I remember yesterday

Will it be as dream

Children’s story book

My little girl would read

And who will I be then

Will I at all

No matter

The dew has come

The echo reverberates

And the fairies

Just for a moment light me way

Dependent as a baby to the bosom

I search for my lantern

The angels say a prayer
