House Cleaning

House Cleaning

A Poem by Maryam Mottahedeh

House Cleaning

Dreams of dates, chocolaty

Sugary sweets things of desire

A need an urge a surge

Such are the lies of the

Mold and infections of candida

It is an addiction just as any other

Not essential to life

But the tortured delusions

Linger by

An arm keeps reaching for everything other

With herculean restraint

 I turn a blind eye

To the special jars and compartments

Sealed away

Way away from will power

But not far enough

To forget the pant

Of that itch of the toxic mosquito

A matter of time

I repeat

It has become my mantra

With a table spoon of coconut medicine

And a glass full of water

I would rather fill it full with tears

Than repeat the

Inheritance of pill popping ignorance

Creating the sugar hungry monster

It is time for house cleaning

The bitter truth even sparkles

As the free loaders starve

This, I do remember

And in absence of a skillful gardener

How such memories

Wilt and become ashes of will power

Discipline and patience too grow

And reciprocate one another

One gesture at a time

One breath

One glance
