It's 9:59 am. The conductors stand silently, watching the clock. The students sit patiently, waiting for the simple gesture that will stir them from their trance. The only sound the be heard is the gentle clicking of the second hand.
10:00 am. The conductors drop their batons. The students fly into action. In a matter of seconds the halls of Joplin high are transformed by the dueling sounds of trombones and string basses.
This is the routine. Every morning when the clock strikes ten this otherwise ordinary high school becomes the battleground between the band and the orchestra. And even when the instruments are packed away for the day the rivalry continues. This is the way it has been for as long anyone can remember and the way things are going to stay... at least for now.
