What's in a Name?

What's in a Name?

A Story by Mark George
"

"What's in a name? That which we call a rose, by any other name would smell as sweet," said Juliet. But beware of judging someone by their name.

What’s  In  A  Name?

-I met her on match.com.

-That’s cool, what’s her name?

-Lakeesha.

-Black girl, huh?

-No…why would you think that?

-Well, her name just sounds…

-That’s pretty racist.

-I didn’t mean anything by it. Does she have her own place?

-No, she lives at her dad’s huge estate.

-Cool, what does her dad do?

-He’s a retired NBA player.

-So…he’s white?

-What is it with you and color?

-Well, you tell me your new girlfriend is Lakeesha and her dad played in the NBA.

-And that’s supposed to mean she’s black?  What if she was black? Isn’t what’s on the inside more important than what’s on the outside?  I wish you were more accepting.

-Chill man…I am.  What’s her last name?

-Takahashi.

-Is she…never mind.

Ha-ha! This is a good one. It's hard not to do a certain amount of stereotyping, huh? A tall, basketball-playing Japanese fellow--I'l have to ponder that one for a while. Though a mere 5"8', I felt like a giant in Japan.
