Mariana Trench

Mariana Trench

A Poem by Marilyn Philips
"

Don't you want to see the deep?

"
They say
Before you swim
You've gotta be ok
To sink

Well, I'm sunk
When does the swimming
Begin?

I'm moving my arms
And kicking my feet
But I don't know which way
Is up
Or down

So I'll bear the burden
And hope that
My breath lasts
Long enough that
I can find the surface

And when I do
That the water won't
Keep rising

Marilyn, a powerful metaphor that works well here. Such vivid imagery of the struggle, desperation, and doubt. And, though doubt remains strong to the end, we still "kick" and "hope"--the human spirit fighting to get right-side up. Nice piece!
