The Best Day

The Best Day

A Poem by marielondon

The sound of waves swayed gently into the evening through the open porch door,

The sky was still holding on to a touch a blue brightness.

The laughter of friends rang out as we filled our plates.

That is the first time I saw you, do you remember?

We all gathered around each other, watching movie after movie.

Popsicles stained our lips, their wrappers filling the garbage can.

I picked one out for you, mango, wasn’t it?

Good choice, you said. Our first conversation.

How pathetic that I have not forgotten.

Yet how endearing your smile was. How could I ever forget?

Then later, skidding across the street, shouting songs on the top of our lungs,

You said you loved me.

Though really a joke, it stuck to my heart.

I fell in love with you, truly.
