First Snow

First Snow

A Poem by Marian Elizabeth

No, winter, stay far,

Spare me from your icy coat,

Allow dead leaves to fall and float

As autumn blows out its breeze.

Let the palette of red hues

Paint the canvas of the park,

Let the trees boast of their bark

As the day rejects the sun.

Lend fall the space of the throne

So I by the pond may read.

Not the orange or the green!

Not this anticipating air!

Not the maple there so fair

That brings color to my dreams!

Not this nostalgia!

Not this bittersweet ache!

Not the"Oh!

A snowflake.

As heavy on the heart as stone.

Why, winter, why?
