Her Heart String

Her Heart String

A Poem by Mariah Slade
"

Tribute to my Grandmother

"

I learned the best of beauty and love through my Grandmother.
Beauty & Love
Divine Beauty and Love
I didn’t find it the arms of man, or some fairytale
I found it in tired eyes closely resembling mine.
Eyes that have seen love and loss,
Seen seasons dance in and sneak away

I learned the best of beauty and love
Through the hands of my grandmother
Hands that stitched love in quilts and slips
Little girls are supposed to wear under dresses
Hands in fact the stitched matching dresses and jumpers for me and No No

Hands that rose in prayer
Never ceasing to give praise God
And I have never seen hands so beautiful

My Grandmother has a green thumb
She brought about life
Planted flowers, gathered ripe tomatoes and squash and apples from her garden

Baked personalized
birthday apple pies
I'd watch her skillfully peel apples shed picked from the tree in the backyard
add cinnamon and brown sugar
and even sweeter she'd pack in all her love
after her love labor in the kitchen
then I’d watch her prick her finger to test her sugar
The blood that ran through her was sweet

Grandma laid pallets told stories
Of farmers and fields
Sister Susie and Martha
And we listened

I learned the best of beauty and love
Through the hands of my 99 year old grandmother
My grandmother who wore favor and grace like a crown
Her hands taught me that love never ceases to Serve
Love never ceases to reverence the Most High
Love Keeps no record of wrong,
Love endures all
