                Chapter 2- The accident

When he awoke in the morning, Sterling’s back was aching

slightly. His stomach growled loudly and he thought ‘I think

breakfast is in order’. Getting up from his bed and walking over

to the dresser with the TV on it turned it on. He pulled out a pair

of jeans, a black t-shirt and a dark blue old navy jacket. He

scrambled into them quickly. On TV a news anchor was talking

about the destruction of a tall building in Seattle by terrorists.

“Man, the worlds seriously going to hell” he said to himself.

He turned off the television and walked over to get the tub that

contained Jake’s food and picked it up. He opened it and scooped

out some food into the dog’s bowl. Then he picked up the dog’s

water bowl and walked over to the sink connected to the wall and

filled it to the brim. Jake bolted toward him as he was placing the

bowl on the floor.

“I gotta go boy, see you later” he said happily.

Sterling chuckled softly; the dog had plowed through half of

his dog food.

“Bye” he said

He walked out into the cold morning air. He thought about going to

McDonalds but they weren’t open yet so he chose Dunkin Donuts

instead. On the way to the Dunkin Donuts, Sterling thought about

what he was going to get for breakfast but he couldn’t

focus, his sister’s face floated through his mind all the way

to the Dunkin Donuts. Soon a headache clung to his consciousness

like a boulder. After walking for thirty minutes the Dunkin Donuts

came into view.

“Finally” he said and continued on towards the doughnut

shop.

When he walked inside the Dunkin Donuts he saw that

almost nobody was there. The person visible was a

large black woman bustling around behind the counter.

When he walked up to the counter the black woman

turned around, she looked absolutely surprised to see

someone here at six-thirty in the morning.

“Hello sir, what can I get you today” the woman asked

half -heartedly.

“One chocolate frosted jelly doughnut, a chocolate chip

muffin, and a medium coffee.”

He stood there watching the woman turn around and

start gathering up his breakfast. When she was finished,

the woman handed him his food and said :

“Ok sir, that will be six dollars and forty- two cents.”

He handed the woman the money and she placed it inside the

cash register and said:

“You have a good day, now.”

   “You too” Sterling replied.

Before leaving he walked over to a small table covered with

sweeteners and creams. Feeling a little spent he dumped the

contents of seven packets of sugar into his coffee. When he

walked out into the cold outside again, he looked up towards

the sky. The sun was concealed by loads of extremely

menacing- looking clouds, ready to drop their massive burden

on the world. Only a few streaks of sunlight pierced through

the dark- gray clouds this early in the morning. Halfway back

home when he had already finished his breakfast, he suddenly

heard the noisy groan of a hardworking car engine and the shrill

high- pitched squealing of rubber tires on asphalt. Sterling spun

around and the last thing he saw before he blacked was a dark blue

sedan swerving in his direction.
