Expectations

Expectations

A Poem by marcie

Is it fair to live out my dreams through my children?

To want more for them

Than i managed to reap for myself

Am i just preying on their innocence?

Steering them towards a pathway

That through circumstance and lack of faith

In myself and in the system

I was unable to walk myself

Jealous of the opportunities laid out for them

Wanting them to grasp them with both hands

And hold on tightly, savouring each moment

But knowing deep down inside

They will let it pass them by

With little more than a passing glance

and a shrug of shoulders

it will be gone , lost forever

Cast upon the wasteland

Along with everything i wanted to  be

Will i be able to hide my disappointment ?

Or gloat in the knowledge that they like me

Have a black mark next to their name

But instead i'll hold them and make everything o.k

Brush them down ready for the next hurdle

Along lifes highway

I don't have children .. yet .. but come from a large family. guess we all took examples from our parents and each other.

Of course parents want to guide their children, that's part of love, isn't it .. but maybe they need to make their own mistakes. And no, there's no sin in wanting more for them than you had or did .. that's human nature. And, if you're as human as that.. you must be a great mother. So there!

They will let it pass them by
With little more than a passing glance
and a shrug of shoulders
it will be gone , lost forever
Cast upon the wasteland
Along with everything i wanted to be

I bet most parents have thought that at some time or another ..

Oh boy, I feel like you sneeked into my mind and took my thoughts on this subject. I get so blasted frustrated with my kids! To this point, I've walked life's road with almost no one to tell me where not to step--I've learned the hard way, but when I try to share that hard-earned knowlege with my sons, they just ignore me. What can a parent do?

My answer to your first line is absolutely. Who said life is fair? We have our children as children for such a short time. I love living vicariously through my daughters. But I'm selfish that way. : )

Nice write.

Oh darling, what a honest beautiful poem , you ask what all parents ask all the time, you hope what all parents hope for their children ,you want that they will be better than you, that they will have more luck in their life, more han we had , you want them to be better :)
