I Can't Hear The MusicA Poem by Manik JA view into the mind of the hearing impaired. The pin rolled across the slant table heading towards the edge Rolling powerlessly to a long fall to shatter the silence And so it falls to its blunt demise and I wait For the din that never shall arrive and make this silence abate. I see the morning sun dawn across the horizon I see the green grass and flowers bathed in dew I see the birds skipping from one branch to the next But their chirps fail to stimulate my ears Ah, she strums the strings of that cello with such skill All that hear move their bodies in agreement I see all this happen but the notes of sweet melody Fall on my ears, bounce, but cannot pervade The water gushing through the ravine cooling my feet And the green canopy over my head giving me shade Still unable to pull me away from this omnipresent lack of sound Into a world of melodious harmonies currently so out of reach. I remember my childhood years when this state of mine seemed so unfair When all the kids ran to greet the ice cream van's jingle While I sat by my window staring so longingly till I saw the van An unjust and unwilling pawn in the greater scheme. As time passed the feeling ebbed away Like the intimidating high tide with its fearsome waves To be replaced by this serenity of acceptance That overcame all anxiety and discontent that brew within. Happy I roamed, aloof of the shrieks and screams That overtook the world like black venom through its veins And filled the void between happiness and sorrow In my own little world shrouded in content aural stillness Forever here, in death as in life, cowering unwillingly from sorrowful sounds. © 2010 Manik J |
