A Yuletide StoryA Poem by mamacatLove blossoms in the depth of winter...The snow is drifting silently out of the window. The house is quiet and the lights are low. High on the top of the Christmas Evergreen She sings hauntingly, winged Madeleine. All through the year, Talbot Wolfman longed for her. Standing on his shelf gathering dust, he thought of her. Now as he creeps and skulks on the topmost stair He practices and rehearses, choosing his words with care. It is nearing midnight, that magickal moment, the witch's hour. He must make his move, or forever cower In the inadequacy of his resolve and his pointed inability to be bold. So thus he labors towards the tree's mooring. Footstep after plastic footstep, his confidence growing. Repeating, reciting every word of endearment For his one love, his angel, his earth and firmament. Slowly the den comes alive with murmurs, whispers. Glass eyes, button eyes, bore witness; silent observers To the rare event unfolding that Yuletide night; Uncertain of the outcome, dejection or delight. Hand over hand, he climbs. Resin snout panting Not with breath, but with anticipation. Wondering, Thinking, second guessing like any lovelorn toy, Getting ever closer to his source of sorrow or joy. Emerging above the last green bough, he prepares himself for his pledge. From down below, every eye stares, Every mouth hangs open. Anticipation grows by the minute. So do the stakes on whether or not he will make it. Madeleine falls silent then, angel eyes sparkling, Amazed at the action figure that is slow in coming. She tries to remember a time when she shared the tree top. Never, she admits. None since she was bought from the shop. As the clock chimes the witching hour, the lights all went out. Mumbles and groans, curses and profanities quietly rang out from every toy, figurine, statuette and painting. Is Talbot successful? What is the ending? The snow covers a silent world outside. The house is quiet and none stirs inside. High on top of the Christmas Evergreen A werewolf and an angel, embracing, quiet and serene. © 2013 mamacat |
