Once upon a dark, formless earth
There crept and hovered Divine,
Who with naught but His words
is said to have spoken all life.
Sun sketched eyes atop the skies
-one opened wide, other reclines-
so began dawns and dusky nights
across globe’s opposing sides.
Then written, two to tend and
take gentle care - as they ought -
of this sphere; thusly was man,
then woman, existence brought.
But nibbled at forbidden fruit,
And thrust from their birthplace –
humanity accepted downward suit
There ended the root of this tale.
Had halted their rising courtship pure -
Nor did they rue their altered hand,
Instead savoring the deceptive lure -
they refused, declined, to withstand.
For when downward turn was took,
Land’s heart broke deep within
And her very core was shook
‘til ruptured was her bonnie skin.
Then that Form above, perhaps behind,
layer upon layer of cloudy heaven,
gazed melancholy, and with a sigh,
the traveler tears embarked their trek.
And droplets did rain and saturate
the very pores of the heart’s core,
‘til overflowed across countenance
what planet could absorb no more.
Yes, sobbing torrent sorely poured
with mourning dew, day and night.
Lamenting dear Universe marred,
the severity of her piteous plight.
So ended flawlessness once claimed -
For earth had lost her perfection...
In pity, where she lay worst scarred,
tender tears veiled with crystal oceans.
