Adoration

Adoration

A Poem by Maggie

I love to listen to the sound of his rough index finger against the course spine of the page as he reveals the next

I lay beside him lost in the softness of his well worn shirt against my cheek  conscious of my body’s shape beside him

Happiness overwhelms me

His orange tea steeps beside the bed and I imagine my thoughts mixing with the aroma above us

I listen for his punctuated laughter uncontrollably erupting every so often and then carefully intercepted by his care for my rest

I’m already awake but I keep my secret to enjoy him a bit longer

I tell myself one more giggle or motion of his neck turning subtly to check that he hadn't disturbed me

Eventually I admit defeat and confess to myself that I wish to stay here forever

Then the swift whip of our dogs tongue on my toes gives me away

I look up at him and can tell that he had already known
