Brian showed up Friday afternoon with a bag of groceries and a cookbook. Julian had never prepared anything more complex than some Beer Bratwurst, yet they were planning on a full Italian dinner.
"So, how do we do this?" Julian asked, looking over the recipes.
"It shouldn't be too hard," Brian told him. “Just follow the directions.”
While Brian prepared the manicotti, Julian cleaned the apartment. It was times like this that Julian appreciated the beauty of his creamy off white carpeting and furniture. It would be the perfect setting for their dinner.
Finally, the pasta was rolled, the salad was tossed and the apartment was spotless. They had only a little while until the girls would be here, so they went ahead and slid the manicotti into the oven. "I love the smell of food cooking," Brian said, leaning back on the sofa. "It reminds me of home." "What are you talking about? This is home!"
Getting up, Brian headed for the door. "See you in about an hour or so," he called, shutting the door behind him. Julian ran his fingers through his hair and looked around the apartment. Pumping up the volume on his stereo, Julian went into his room to get dressed.
True to his word, Brian showed up sixty minutes later with his girlfriend, Brittany. Her real name was Britannia, but had shortened it to the American version after starting High School. She wore a white shirt beneath a brown suede suit jacket that was cropped to her waist, and a pair of jeans. She had long golden hair that reached her waist, appearing as smooth as silk. Brian had on a pair of Dockers and a cream colored v-neck sweater with a blue stripe along the collar and cuffs, looking as though he had stepped from the pages of GQ. They were so perfect together, Julian was often jealous of the way they fit so naturally together. Brian had everything going for him.
Brittany's family had also come to America because of his family business. Her Father had been the head of the main branch in England, and Julian's Father had found his much needed help indispensable. Of course, Brittany too was needed, and fit perfectly into their circle of friends. Although, she had always liked Brian most of all.
"Okay, well everything is set," Julian announced. "I'll go get Jessica and be back in about 15 minutes."
"Jessica?" Brittany asked. "What, no more Stefanie?"
"Julian has finally gotten smart, my dear. He's actually dating a real girl!" Brian winked at Julian.
"Yeah, my blow up dolls kept popping every time I tried to get physical. It was starting to cost me a fortune.” Julian shook his head, laughing silently to himself. “I'll be right back."
Jessica was still in the bathroom finishing her make up when the doorbell rang. She was wearing the same light blue sweater she had worn to the party last weekend, only this time she had paired it with a short gray skirt, which ended ½ way down her thigh. She hurried, barefoot, to answer the door before he had to ring the bell again. Julian stood there smiling, wearing a pair of khaki pants and a dark gray wool v-neck sweater. “Hi! Come on in,” she told him, ushering him through the door.
"You look great," he said, his eyes taking her in.
"Thanks, if you give me a minute, I'll look even better. I need to put on my shoes."
“Yeah, you might want those. It’s a bit of a walk,” he teased.
“You didn’t drive?”
“Around the corner?” he laughed. “Should I have?”
Slipping on her heels, Jessica chuckled as well. “No. But most guys I know will drive to the mailbox and back if it means they wont have to get up. A walk around the block is completely out of the question.”
“I’m not most guys.”
“I certainly hope so,” she said more to herself than to Julian as she searched frantically for her purse. “Well, let’s hit the pavement.”
When Jessica entered Julian's apartment for the first time, she was impressed. He had beautiful off white carpeting and furniture. There was a painting of the ocean above his fireplace and a huge model of a pirate ship docked upon the mantelpiece. There was a large entertainment center, upon which sat a small fountain surrounded by framed photographs and an incense burner. Off to the left sat a beautiful dinning table and what appeared to be the door to Julian’s bedroom. The kitchen was to her right, a long bar with stools separated it from the living room. A hallway led away from the kitchen to another bedroom and bathroom. Potted trees and plants filled every corner of the house, and the blinds were drawn on what appeared to be a door leading to a deck at the far end of the living room.
“Wow Julian, this place is beautiful. Don’t tell me you did this yourself!”
“Excuse me?” he laughed.
“Well, you either had someone decorate for you, or you’re Gay and not telling me.”
“Oh, very funny, Jess,” he told her, before pointing to the couple on the sofa. “You might remember Brian from the party last weekend, and this is his girlfriend Brittany. Guys, this is Jessica.”
“Hi,” she told them.
“Go have a seat on the sofa, I’ll be right with you,” Julian announced before stepping into the kitchen to make himself a drink.
It wasn’t long before the four were talking comfortably in the living room. Brian and Brittany on the love seat facing the fireplace, and Julian and Jessica on the sofa, which faced the entertainment center.
Suddenly, Brian sat forward, a strange look on his face. “Hey, do you guys smell something funny?”
“Oh, s**t!” Julian exclaimed, leaping from the couch. “The manicotti!”
Brian too leapt from his seat and the two dashed into the kitchen, throwing open the oven. Smoke filled the room as they pulled out a black tray of what used to be pasta. Julian threw the tray onto the counter, chuckling.
“I shudder to think what else may go wrong tonight.” No sooner had the words escaped his mouth when suddenly the power went out, plunging the apartment in darkness. The two of them looked at each other and burst into laughter.
“You just had to say something, didn’t you?” Brian groaned.
"Don't worry," Julian assured, picking up his cell phone. "I have everything under control."
Within thirty minutes, the four of them were seated around Julian's candlelight dining room table, eating garlic bread, salad and slices of pizza on delicate china plates.
"You know something,” Jessica confessed. "This is the best gourmet meal I've had in ages. Thanks for inviting me."
"But please, next time, leave the cooking to the women!" Brittany added.
Bursting into laughter, Brian gave her a big hug. "Gladly," he said kissing her. "Gladly."
Julian and Jessica sat in front of the fire, getting to know one another better through a series of interesting conversations. Brian and Brittany had left hours ago, but the two of them were still going strong.
“Did I tell you I got a new car?” Julian suddenly mentioned.
“No.”
“Oh, must have slipped my mind.”
“A new car slips your mind?” She asked, clearly not believing him.
“Well, I didn’t really want it. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a great car. It’s just that I rather liked my old one.”
“What happened, did your other car break down or something?”
“Actually, my parents bought it for me. They hated my old ‘Vette with a passion and have been bitching at me for months to buy a Mercedes or a BMW or something. Finally they decided that if I wasn’t going to drive a luxury vehicle then by God I would at least drive a new one. So, they bought it and had it delivered the other day. They made it kind of hard to say no,” Julian would have gone on, but he didn’t want to spoil the evening by bringing his family life into it. “You, uh, you want to go for a ride?”
“Sure,” she agreed.
Twenty minutes later, Julian's brand new black Corvette pulled into the lot of an old park. Most of it was concealed by huge trees, which provided a very private and secluded area.
"So, where are we?" Jessica asked as he shut off the engine.
“Oh just a little spot I know,” Julian winked, opening the sunroof to let in the cool night air.
“It’s really beautiful out here,” she said, gazing across at the surrounding view. “Breathtaking, actually.” They sat quietly for a few moments before Jessica was compelled to speak again. “Julian, its obvious that you’d like to start seeing me. So, there’s something I feel I need to tell you.”
“Oh?” he asked, his interest peaked.
“I’m not really sure how to put this.”
“You’re married,” he offered, clearly teasing her.
“No,” she smiled, but then her face tightened, her expression growing hard and serious. “I…uh…I recently had a bad experience,” she began, her voice faltering. “And it…it caused some problems. Anyway, the point is, I like you.”
Relieved, Julian smiled back at her. “Thanks. I’m in like with you, too.”
Jessica ignored his joking and continued, “But if this is some sort of a one-night stand thing we can just put an end to it right here.”
“I was kind of hoping for more,” Julian heard himself tell her. He was surprised at his honesty, but felt no need to withdraw the statement.
“Well, more would be nice. But, uh, to be honest “more” takes time with me. Because of…before…I have to take things very slowly. And I do mean slowly, Julian. I’m not here to put undue pressure on you, but I want to make sure you understand – fully – what you’re getting into.”
Softly, Julian reached over and took her hand, looking deep into her eyes. She seemed so vulnerable all of a sudden. He was struck with an overwhelming urge to hold her, to protect her. He had never seen this side of Jessica before, and it drew him in even stronger than her looks first had. “You’re beautiful when you’re insecure,” he told her softly. “To think there’s a sweet young thing under all that armor.”
“I have a good reason for my armor,” her tone was cold, angry. Julian wondered just how badly she had been hurt. He wanted nothing more than to heal her.
“Well one of these days you’ll no longer need it with me,” pausing for a moment he took a moment to gaze into her lovely eyes. “I still want to see you, if that’s alright.”
“Yes,” she answered, almost a whisper. “Thank you for a lovely evening.”
Slowly Julian pulled his hand from hers. “You’re right, it’s late. I should probably get you home.” Reluctantly he started the ignition and put the car into gear, pulling away into the night.
He walked her to her door, and waited as she unlocked it, opening it just a crack before turning around to face him again. “Thanks again,” she told him. “I really did have a wonderful time.”
Julian stood there awkwardly, not sure how to proceed. “I’m glad,” he answered, “Well…goodnight.”
Suddenly she stepped towards him, wrapping her arms around him in a warm embrace. He pulled her body to him, his lips lingering against her neck as he inhaled her sweet perfume. She tentatively stepped back, her face towards his, looking up into his eyes. As she did so, her lips momentarily brushed against his. Julian could feel her breath against his own, mixing in with every breath he took. He held her gaze for a moment, reaching up to touch a strand of her dark hair. Then, slowly he leaned forward again until his lips met hers in a passionate embrace.
Releasing herself, Jessica slowly backed up towards the door. “Goodnight, Julian,” she said smiling, her eyes shone with a faraway glow.
“Goodnight,” he whispered.
The following Friday, Julian took Jessica to dinner at a beautiful French restaurant in the city. It was as well known for its atmosphere as it was for its cuisine. Julian often brought dates here for the romantic ambiance.
Once they were seated Julian ordered a bottle of champagne to be brought while they looked over the menus. After a few minutes, Jessica was still staring at the menu with a puzzled look on her face. “Something wrong?” Julian did his best to suppress his amusement with her predicament.
“Julian, the menu is in French. I have no idea what any of these entrees are!” She whispered frantically.
“Do you trust me?” He smiled. “I could order for the two of us.”
“Just don’t order me something weird. I don’t want to find snails or brains in front of me.”
Winking, Julian reached over to take the menu from her hand. “Don’t worry, you’re in good hands.”
Just then the waiter returned with the champagne, and after corking it, poured Julian a small amount to sample. After meeting his approval, the waiter then filled both of their glasses. Julian then proceeded to order their dinner in French.
“This is a beautiful restaurant,” Jessica commented. “Is this one your family frequents often?”
“Actually, yes,” Julian confirmed. “It’s one of my favorites as well.”
“Must be nice to be able to afford a place like this on a regular basis.”
“Yeah, I guess,” he answered, taking a sip of champagne.
“I can’t imagine what it would be like to be next in line to inherit millions, and a Fortune 500 Company as well. I’ll be lucky someday just to work for a company like Sunrose.”
“I doubt that Sunrose will ever be mine,” Julian told her, taking a long swallow of champagne.
“I thought that your Dad owned the Company. Wouldn’t that put you next in line?” Jessica asked, intrigued.
“My, aren’t we overly curious about my assets. Would you like a copy of my stock portfolio before we begin dating seriously?” Julian teased, trying to keep a straight face.
“I’m a business major, Julian, you know – Corporate Law,” Jessica defended. “I spend all day studying this very thing. You’re in a position to tell me first hand how it works. I can’t help but be curious.”
“Then you should understand better than most. Think about the line of succession,” Julian began. “I might be a candidate, but I’m certainly not a prime one. After all, the Company was set up as an equal partnership between my Father and Uncle Jacque, so it would go from my Father to Jacque or vice-versa. From there control would pass to Anton and Edward, who are the VPs of Operation. Once those four have retired or are no longer able to work then, and only then, would it go to the children. Even then, it’s tricky.”
“How so?”
“Well, my Father and Jacque are equal partners, so they had to devise a fair way to determine which of their children would have first right to the Company. If my Father dies first, it would go to Jacque and then his children. If Uncle Jacque dies first, then it would go to my Father and then to me. If by some force of nature all four partners die, followed by both the LaFlur kids and myself then it would go to Brian and so on down the line. Of course, none of the partners’ children want control of the company. Oh, except for Pierre LaFlur. He’s really the only one competent enough to actually run Sunrose. In fact, he works for the Company as an Executive and he’s only 27.” Pausing, Julian took another sip of champagne, his brow creased deep in thought.
“As for myself, I have no interest whatsoever in running the Company, much to my parents dismay. So, in the unlikely event of Sunrose falling into my hands I would just appoint a Chairman and remain a silent partner. Then I’d just sit back and watch the money roll in. You know, if that did happen, I would most likely appoint Pierre. He’s the one who wants the Company – he’s already busting his balls to get it.”
“What about Brian? Would he have a say?”
“Not really,” Julian explained. “His Father isn’t actually a full-fledged partner. Just my Father and Uncle Jacque. Sure, Anton is a major stockholder, as is Brittany’s Father, Edward, but as VPs of Ops neither actually own enough to have any say in the future of Sunrose. Don’t get me wrong, financially speaking their families will be set for life. However, neither Brian nor Brittany, their siblings nor future spouses will be supported directly from future Company revenue. Once their Fathers are no longer with the Company, the family stops receiving all funds. Unless, one of them is appointed as Successor.”
“What about you?” Jessica asked. “Will you continue to receive funds after your Father retires?”
“Only if I’m appointed as Successor. Right now, I have my Trust Fund and income pours into it on a monthly basis from my share of Company Stocks. When my parents die I will inherit the Estates and all of their funds, stocks and personal assets."
Taking a moment, Julian took yet another swallow of his champagne before continuing on his explanation. “However, Sunrose itself is another story. Due to the multiple partners and major stockholders no clear line of succession has been set. Of course, my Father and Jacque have the right to appoint a successor while both are still alive. This was done on purpose to ensure that the Company would go to the most qualified candidate, and to prevent any feuding over the inheritance.”
“I know of Companies doing this to prevent spouses and family members from selling the Company once the owner dies, but I’ve never seen it in place to prevent feuding between families. It sounds like something straight out of a Mafia movie.”
“Just think about the future earning potential of Sunrose. If the Corporation continues at its current rate of profit, it stands to make its future president millions upon millions of dollars. It’s ownership of the Company that’s the brass ring, and everybody wants a piece of it.”
"Everyone but you, it would seem," she added thoughtfully.
Just then the food was brought to the table, and Julian poured himself another glass of champagne. He was about to offer some to Jessica when he noticed her glass was still full. “Is there something wrong with the Champagne?”
“Oh?” Jessica asked, blushing. “No. No, I’m sure it’s fine. I just don’t drink.”
“No even on special occasions?”
“No, not really.”
“What a shame,” he commented, shaking his head. “It’s good champagne. Oh well, more for me!”
Over the next few weeks, Julian saw Jessica as much as possible. It was difficult for the two of them to find the time between their school schedules and Jessica’s job. Most of their time was spent studying together, or over an early dinner. Some days Julian would bring his homework down to the coffee shop so he could visit with Jessica in between customers. Their relationship was great, but Julian couldn’t help but feel a little distant from Jessica. She had made it clear from the start that she had just come off a bad relationship and that she wasn’t ready for any type of commitment. Because of this Julian didn’t push her to spend more time with him, and he kept their relationship at a friendship level. It was difficult for him to date her each weekend, and not have any physical contact. Usually this type of relationship would have lasted exactly two dates on a normal basis, but for some reason Julian really wanted to take the time to get to know Jessica. He wanted to do things right. He wondered if this was a sign of maturity on senility.
That evening he was sitting at the coffee shop, drinking a cappuccino and reading over an article he hoped to use in a speech he was writing for the upcoming debate tournament next spring. Jessica had been scheduled to get off work earlier that afternoon but ended up staying late to cover for someone else. Exhausted, she took a moment to sit down at his table.
“Jess, why don’t you tell them to call somebody else in. You need to get some sleep.”
“Easier said than done, Julian. Besides, I really need the money. They raised my rent again and I’m having a hard time making ends meet. I’m almost to the point where I’d rather move back into the dorms. At least it was cheaper and I had a roommate to help cover expenses.”
“Well, you know, I could lend you a little bit to help you out. Then you wouldn’t have to work so much.”
“No Julian, really. I can’t accept your money. Besides, don’t you need to pay your own rent?”
“No, actually my parents pay for my apartment. My trust fund is to be used for clothing, travel and entertainment purposes. They don’t want me using it for rent or basic living expenses.”
Sighing, Jessica rubbed her tired eyes. “If only we could all be so lucky.”
“Please let me help out, Jessica. I hate to see you working your fingers to the bone.”
Nodding her head, Jessica consented. “But only for this month, Julian. I won’t have you carrying me financially.”
“No problem,” he smiled, cunningly.
The next afternoon when Julian stopped by Jessica’s apartment, he was met with a skeptic grin. “Julian,” she warned. “I thought I told you I only needed temporary help.”
“You did,” he smiled. “I helped you out temporarily.”
“When I agreed to this it was for one month’s worth of rent. But, when I went down to the apartment office this morning, I was told my rent was paid in full for the next year.”
“I really don’t know what you’re talking about,” Julian feigned innocently.
“Well, I won’t have you spending that much money on someone you just met. I don’t feel right about it.”
“Don’t worry about it,” Julian told her. “You can pay me back after we get married.”
“Oh, is marriage a term of this loan?”
“No,” he laughed, grabbing her around the waist and pulling her close. “Let’s just say I paid that money as an investment in our future. If it doesn’t work out, then you got yourself a year of free rent for the trouble.”
“I don’t know about this, Julian,” Jessica worried. “I don’t want to feel like I’m in debt to you.”
“You’re not,” Julian kissed her softly upon the lips, holding her tight. “It’s a gift. Now please, can we not talk about this anymore? It’s starting to depress me.”
Nodding in agreement, Jessica kissed him back and the two held each other close in a warm embrace.
When Julian returned to his apartment that night, he was surprised to find an invitation in the mail. It was for a fall fashion show and publicity party for a top New York designer in Manhattan that weekend. He knew this had to be from Stefanie, for she often sent him special invitations to her shows. This would be an excellent opportunity to meet with her on good terms, and break the news about Jessica. After all, he hadn’t seen nor spoken with her since Dean’s party. He wondered how well she would take the news. Julian hoped she would not be upset. Technically they were no longer dating, and she could see other people, yet they always managed to come together. Julian still thought of Stefanie as a friend.
Glancing at his watch, Julian wondered if it was too late to call his Father. Then again, Julian recalled that he often worked late. Reaching for the phone, Julian dialed up his Father’s private mobile number. It took only a few minutes to get through, and luckily his Father was still awake so he had a few moments to speak with him.
“Julian, I wasn’t expecting to hear from you until later in the Semester. Is there a problem with the car?”
“Oh no, the car’s just fine,” Julian assured him. “I need to get up to Manhattan this weekend. I was wondering if the Company jet was going to be in the area.”
“You’re in luck. I have a business Seminar in Manhattan on Friday. I can take you up with me, and drop you off at the Airport. However, you’ll have to phone me on Saturday and advise when you need the jet sent back for you. How long were you planning on staying?”
“Just the night.”
“Shouldn’t be a problem then.”
“Thank you, Father. I appreciate the lift.”
“Just be at the office by eight o’clock on Friday morning to catch the flight out of town,” he advised sternly. “I will leave the Airport at Nine AM with or without you. Now, I have a lot of work to attend to, so I will speak with you later. Goodbye Julian.”
With that, the line was disconnected, and Julian stood there holding the phone and feeling like a fool. He always hated asking his Father for use of the private jet, but he had no time to book a commercial flight. At least this time his Father already planned on being in Manhattan. He was in luck after all. Now all he had to do was call Jessica and let her know he wouldn’t be in town for that weekend. He assumed she would not mind since their relationship was still at the casual level. Julian, of course, hoped to change all that within the next few weeks. He would be patient, and soon she would be his.
Julian arrived at the Fashion Show early, and showing the VIP badge that Stefanie had sent him, was escorted backstage where everyone was preparing for the big event. Stefanie was sitting in front of her vanity table smoking a cigarette, while a young man worked on her hair.
“Julian, darling!” she exclaimed, and immediately rose from her chair to greet him. Embracing him, she kissed him on the cheek. “I was afraid you wouldn’t come.”
“What? And miss all this excitement?” he told her, returning the kiss.
“I was beginning to feel just terrible,” she sighed, sitting back down so the hairdresser could complete his work. “I haven’t had a moment to call you since I got back into town. We had such a lovely time at the party too. You must think I’m a total flake.”
“Never my darling,” he smiled, trying not to laugh.
“Well, at least stay for the party tonight. You are staying over in Manhattan, aren’t you?”
“Of course. I was hoping to spend some time with you.”
“Fabulous!” she exclaimed, putting out her cigarette. “Well you’d better go sit down, the show will be starting soon.”
“Okay, I’ll see you backstage when it’s over.” Bending down, he kissed her lightly on the lips. “Break a nail.”
“Don’t you mean break a leg?”
“Whatever,” he laughed, teasing her.
The Fashion Show was excellent, and Julian enjoyed watching Stefanie in her element. If one could say that it took talent to strut down a catwalk, then Stefanie was as talented as they come. She was a true professional in the fashion world. Not to mention she looked breathtaking in each of the ensembles she modeled.
Following the show, they attended a Press party for all of the models and designers. Stefanie wore a green silk shirt with long sleeves that was buttoned only to the third button hole, just past her black lace bra. This caused her shirt to hang open, showing off her washboard stomach and the tattoo of a sun circling her bellybutton. She wore a short black mini skirt and black suede heels, which accented her long legs. Her hair was pulled up with a clip and several strands hung down loosely, framing her delicate features. She looked stunning.
At the party, Julian was introduced to the players and high rollers of the Fashion World. Of course, upon learning who he was they all seemed to have a fabulous investment that he just couldn’t pass by. Julian, however, downplayed himself as much as possible, to help keep the spotlight on the true star. He stood by her side while she was interviewed and publicity photos were taken. She seemed to come alive with all of the attention that was given. Stefanie was positively radiant. It was easy for Julian to remember why he had fallen in love with her in the first place. Finally, as midnight drew near and the alcohol became scarce, Stefanie was ready to leave the party.
“Why don’t we head over to your Hotel room for a private party of two?” she whispered, while playfully kissing his earlobe.
Julian barely had time to unlock the door before Stefanie was all over him. Pulling him to her, she kissed him sensually, teasing his mouth with her tongue. Julian aggressively returned her kisses while removing her leather jacket, throwing it to the floor. Placing his hands to her shoulders Julian guided her towards the bed, all the while kissing her deeply. When they reached the large bed, Stefanie fell backwards against it, bringing Julian down on top of her. Laughing at their urgency, Julian reached forward to steady himself and they moved together until they were lying across the middle of the bed. Stefanie wiggled her toes until her shoes were loose, kicking each of them across the room with one fast movement. Leaning back onto her elbows, she again allowed Julian to lay atop her as he covered her neck and face with kisses. Stopping for a moment, he helped Stefanie to sit up. Unbuttoning her silk shirt, she removed the garment, throwing it to the floor. Next she slipped her skirt down, throwing it, too, off the side of the bed. Reaching up she removed the clip from her hair; the platinum strands falling down to frame her face in a golden halo.
Meanwhile, Julian too was removing his clothing, and the two turned to face each other, kneeling on the bed. Julian looked down at Stefanie’s lean body, dressed now only in her black lace bra and matching thong. Reaching out for her, Julian gently pushed the straps of her bra over her shoulders, revealing the soft flesh. Bringing her to him, he kissed her passionately.
Lying back down upon the bed, Julian guided Stefanie so that she was now beneath him. Placing a hand to her firm buttock, he removed her underwear in one quick pull. Then, moving downward he brought his mouth to her full breasts and began to kiss them hungrily. He continued caress her skin with his tongue as he moved down her chest to her belly and finally to her hips. Positioning himself at the foot of the bed, Julian buried his head between her sweet thighs, kissing her desperately, urgently, deeply as she moaned in pleasure, her fingers grabbing and twisting to keep herself steady.
Just when Julian thought she was going to climax, he moved again so that he was once again on top of her, and brought his mouth down upon hers. Within moments he was inside her and the two moved their bodies in a desperate rhythm, clinging to each other while their fingers scratched at one another in an attempt to slow their passions. The world seemed to turn and Julian found himself caught up in the moment, twisting and turning in the covers so that the two were completely covered. Rolling onto his back, he brought Stefanie down so that she was now straddling him, and the two continued unaware of anything but their bodies moving together in the beautiful rhythms of love, passion and animal lust.
Pulling the covers down, Julian lifted his head up to find him and Stefanie entwined in the large comforter in the middle of the floor. “Are you alive in there?” he asked her, lifting the covers in an attempt to free them both.
“My God, Julian, that was magnificent,” she smiled weakly. “I think I need a cigarette.”
“I was thinking more along the lines of room service,” he told her. “I’m famished. Why don’t we order a pizza?”
“Are you mental?” she laughed.
“Oh yes, I forgot, you stopped eating sometime during the Bush administration.”
“I eat,” she pouted.
“It doesn’t count if you throw it up,” he teased, reaching for the phone. Calling down to room service he ordered himself a large hamburger with everything on it and an extra large order of French fries. “Oh, and can I get a large piece of lettuce on the side and a cup of coffee for the lady?”
“A*****e!” Stefanie laughed, hitting him in the head with a pillow.
“Nope, that will be all,” he said into the phone.
“Well while you’re waiting for your food, I’m going to go take a shower.”
“Okay, just put the stopper in so you don’t fall down the drain,” he called after her.
By the time Stefanie was done with her shower, she found Julian sitting at the table dressed only in jeans and eating his hamburger. “Want some fries?” he asked her, as she slipped into the complimentary terry cloth robe.
“Oh, that sounds good.” Sitting down at the table, she snagged a few off his plate. “I haven’t eaten all day.”
“Oh my God, you’re going to eat?” he laughed, pretending to act surprised.
“Enough, Julian.” Wiping her mouth, she smiled at him. “So, what have you been up to back in good old PA?”
“The usual; going to class, preparing for tournament, getting through finals. It’s all about the same. Although, I have met someone.”
“Oh really?” Stefanie raised her eyebrows in surprise. “Well, it must not be too serious if you’re here with me.”
“Not yet,” Julian admitted. “But I’d like it to be. However she just came off a bad relationship so she wants to move very, very slowly.”
“I really don’t know what to say.”
“Well, Jesus Stefanie. You know that we aren’t exclusive,” he scowled. “I’m sure you’ve been around with a few men since you moved to New York.”
“Of course I have, Julian. I’m not getting possessive on you.”
“Oh, well for a moment there, it sounded like you were,” he apologized. “You know that I will always have a place in my heart for you, Stefanie.”
“And apparently one in your bed as well,” she quipped.
“Well, whatever works.”
“You are such a s**t today!” she laughed. “Can’t you be serious for a moment?”
Reaching out, Julian pulled her to him, allowing her to sit down on his lap. Taking her cheek in his hand, he pulled her face down to his own, kissing her once again with all the passion he was feeling that evening. “Thank you for inviting me this weekend, Stefanie.”
“Thank you for being here,” she smiled back at him.
The next morning, Julian met his Father at the Airport, and flew back home to Pennsylvania. He told Jessica later that week that he had gone to a Fashion show, but he never mentioned Stefanie or what happened at the Hotel room. He didn’t hear from Stefanie after returning home, but he felt that was for the best. It was going to be hard on both of them next time they spoke, for Julian would have to make it clear that their sexual relationship was now over. He never should have slept with her that weekend, but Julian had been sexually frustrated by his relationship with Jessica and had needed the release. As usual he knew that Stefanie would be a willing party.
Finally, two weeks later, she called inviting him to come up to New York for another show. Julian decided that it was time to drop the bomb, and was tempted to decline the invitation and break the news over the phone, but decided against it. It would be easier for both of them if he told her in person that he was serious about Jessica. He should have stuck to his guns the last time he was there, and he promised himself that this time he would break things off for good.
This time he booked a commercial flight into town and secured a Hotel room for the night. On his way to the show he decided to stop in at a local flower shop and he picked out a small bouquet of daisies and violets for Stefanie. Julian thought it might make the transition easier.
Stepping backstage he was directed to the changing area, where Stefanie was being dressed in the first outfit of the evening. Sneaking up behind her, her reached around her shoulders, presenting her with the flowers. Surprised, Stefanie turned around to see who the gift was from. Upon seeing Julian she threw her arms around him and kissed him soundly on the lips. “Julian!” she exclaimed. “Thank you, they’re beautiful.”
“So are you,” he answered. “You look great.”
“Well, that’s my job,” she answered. “It’s good to see you again so soon. I’m beginning to feel spoiled.”
“Well don’t get feeling too happy about the situation. I’m afraid we need to talk after the show.”
“Okay,” Stefanie agreed. “Why don’t we go back to my place afterwards?”
“Sounds good to me. I’ll see you then.” Kissing her on the cheek, Julian left the dressing area and went into the auditorium to take his seat.
After the show, they found themselves back at Stefanie’s apartment, and once again she was all over him. Pushing her away, Julian took a seat on the leather sofa. “Stefanie, I didn’t come here to get laid. I came here to talk.”
“So, we can talk after,” she cooed, kissing his earlobe. “Talking is overrated anyway.”
“Damnit Stefanie, I’m serious here! I’m not going to have sex with you,” he exclaimed, getting upset. “In fact, I don’t plan on having sex with you again at any time in the future.”
“What are you talking about?” Stefanie asked, sitting back. “What the Hell is going on with you lately, Julian?”
“I told you that the last time I was here. I’ve met someone and it’s serious. It’s serious enough that I don’t plan on seeing anyone else.”
Reaching for her pack of cigarettes, Stefanie quickly lit one. “Well, we’re friends Julian. You don’t stop seeing friends when you fall in love with somebody.”
“Friends don’t f**k,” he reminded her.
“We could be the kind of friends who do. Come on, Julian, I’m horny. Help me out here.”
Slamming his fist down onto the couch, Julian got up and walked over to the window. “Listen to me Stefanie. I came up here to break up with you, it’s over. We are no longer an item.”
“Oh, excuse me!” she exclaimed. “But I don’t think so! You’re in this too deep Julian. You can’t pull out now. What’s the deal, Julian, is she that good in bed?”
“Actually Stefanie, I haven’t slept with Jessica yet,” Julian admitted. “Besides, that’s not the point.”
“You mean you’re dumping me for a girl you haven’t even fucked yet?” Standing up, Stefanie knocked into the coffee table, sending the ashtray clattering to the floor. “What makes you think you have the right?”
“What exactly is the problem, Stefanie? Since when do I have to get your permission? What was it we said after Graduation? You were going to New York and I was going to college, and we made an agreement, remember? We said that our relationship was no longer exclusive, and that we were free to see other people.”
“Yes, but we also continued to see each other,” she defended. “No matter who we were seeing, we have always continued to sleep with each other.”
“Just where has that gotten us?” Julian asked, his voice raising in anger. “With the exception of the last time we were together, we spend all of our time fighting. In fact, the fighting has been so bad that at one point even you made the comment that we were better friends than lovers. Well, now I’m not sure if we’re even good at being friends anymore. I care about you, Stefanie, which is why I felt that I had to come up here. I felt I owed it to both you and Jessica to lay the cards out on the table. To tell you how I felt about her, and give the relationship a chance by giving it a clean start. No more affairs. Not even with you, Stefanie. Jesus! What am I supposed to do? I come up here to save the friendship and all you want to do is turn it into some torrid love affair. You don’t even give a s**t about who you hurt or why. All you care about is yourself!”
“Oh, and you don’t!” Stefanie yelled back at him, tears coming to her eyes. “I’ve done everything you’ve wanted me to. I’ve given you your space. I’ve even let you date other people, sleep around. I haven’t gotten possessive and I haven’t gotten jealous. But you were supposed to come back to me! I’ve invested the past four years of my life into this relationship and look what it’s gotten me. Once in awhile you show up for sex and then you run off to some other girl. Well it’s not fair! You can’t just leave me like this, it’s not fair!”
“And would it be fair to Jessica if I continued the affair with you? Am I supposed to feel obligated to you Stefanie? Am I supposed to just keep sleeping with you to keep you happy when I don’t even love you anymore? God Stefanie, I thought we were past all this, I thought we were friends!”
“Oh, I’m supposed to stay friends with the guy who just said he didn’t love me anymore.” Pointing to the door, Stefanie glared at him. “Just get the f**k out of here Julian. Obviously you don’t love me anymore, so you won’t care that you just ripped my f*****g heart out and stomped all over it. F**k you.”
“Goodbye Stefanie.” Julian grabbed his coat and slammed the door behind him.
Walking down the avenue, Julian decided to just keep on walking rather than hailing a cab. He felt that the fresh air would do him some good. Eventually he came to a local pub and stopped inside for a drink. His evening certainly didn’t turn out exactly as expected, but at least he didn’t have to worry about Stefanie anymore. He felt horrible about hurting her feelings, for he did still care about her, but he just couldn’t handle the stress anymore. What he’d said to Stefanie had been cruel but it was true. He didn’t love her anymore. He had just been using her. She was right after all, it wasn’t fair.
Julian was on his third drink, when Stefanie entered the bar. Sitting down next to him, she ordered a drink.
“Hi,” she said bashfully. “I thought you might have stopped in here. I just wanted a chance to tell you that I’m sorry.”
“I’m sorry too, Stefanie. It didn’t have to end so badly.”
“Are we still friends?”
Looking at her for a moment, Julian’s harsh gaze softened. “Yeah, we’re still friends.”
“I’m happy you found someone, Julian. I hope that someday I’ll get to meet her.”
“Well, maybe someday you will.”
Sighing, Stefanie took a sip of her drink. She didn’t even look back up at him when she asked her next question. “I’m never going to see you again, am I?”
“Probably not. Well, not outside of Family functions anyway. But I think for now that’s the best.”
Nodding, Stefanie lit a cigarette and inhaled deeply. Her eyes began to tear up, but she didn’t cry. “You’re probably right.”
They sat there for a few minutes in silence while both finished their drinks. For the first time in their lives there was awkwardness between them. “It was good to see you again, Julian,” Stefanie told him. “If you ever need to talk, don’t be afraid to give me a call.”
“I will,” Julian smiled at her. “Take care of yourself, Stefanie.” Paying for his tab, Julian walked out of the bar and signaled for a taxi to take him back to his Hotel.
The next morning he decided to head back into town, catching the first available flight home. Since it was just before ten o’clock, he decided to swing by the coffee shop on his way home, to see if Jessica was working.
She was sitting behind the counter working on a paper for her business class, and looked up with a smile as Julian walked in. Sitting down at the counter, Julian dropped his overnight bag to the floor.
“Hey, I thought you had class this morning,” she commented, obviously surprised to see him there.
“I did, but I had to skip it today.” Rubbing his eyes, Julian ran his fingers through his hair.
“God, you look exhausted,” she told him, noticing the bag on the floor. “What’s with the bag?”
“I just got back from New York.”
“You did?” she asked. “When did you go up there?”
“Yesterday afternoon,” he told her. “I had some things to take care of.”
“Is everything all right?” Jessica asked, concerned.
“Yeah,” Julian yawned. “It’s fine. I guess I’ve just had a long day.”
Taking his hand, Jessica leaned over and kissed him softly. “Don’t worry, everything is going to be all right now.”
“Yes it is,” Julian smiled. “It sure is.”
The remainder of the weekend and following week passed fairly uneventful for Julian. He didn’t hear from Stefanie again, however Julian felt that this was for the best. It had been a difficult breakup for both of them. He was just glad to have it all behind him.
Not long after returning from New York, Julian received an invitation to Dean’s annual Halloween party. As usual, it was going to be held on Halloween night, and full costume attire was required. It sounded like fun, and Dean was even offering a door prize for the best-dressed couple. Stopping by Jessica’s apartment on his way home from school, he thought he’d ask her if she’d like to go.
“I’m sorry, Julian,” Jessica apologized. “But I have to work on Halloween.”
“Come on, can’t you get the night off?”
“It sounds like fun, but this Holiday is mandatory if I want Thanksgiving and Christmas off.”
“Well, then maybe I won’t go and you and I can just do something together when your shift is over.”
“I know,” Jessica thought. “Why don’t I just meet you at the party when my shift is over. I shouldn’t be off too late, and you know how Dean’s parties are. They usually last well into the morning.”
”True,” Julian added. “Well okay, I guess that would work out fine.” Sitting on the edge of the bed, Julian looked around the small room. “So, do you want to do anything tonight? We could catch a late movie at the Cineplex.”
“That sounds like fun,” Jessica grabbed a newspaper off her desk. “Let’s see what’s playing.”
The Halloween party took place that Saturday night in a Hotel in Philadelphia. Dean had rented out a large dance floor and banquet hall for this lavish event. As usual most of the student body had been invited. Once again this year, it was a ghoulish yet gala event. Julian had chosen to come dressed as a Vampire this year, hoping to win the prize for best costume. He wore a white colonial shirt with ruffles down the front and his black leather pants. Over the shirt he wore a purple velvet smoking jacket with black silk cuffs and lapels. He had purchased a pair of porcelain fangs and red contact lenses that gave his look an added touch of realism. Everyone he passed this evening smiled with frightened delight as he peered at them over a pair of wire framed sunglasses with red lenses. He felt rather “Lestatesque”. Picking up a glass of Transylvanian Merlot from the Hotel bar, Julian mingled with the guests at the party.
It wasn’t long before Julian saw Brian and Brittany headed towards him, and he hurried over to greet the two of them. They were dressed as a Catholic Nun and Monk, and Julian laughed heartily at their outfits.
“Forgive me Father, for I have sinned!” He laughed, and flashed a devilish smile.
“I’m sorry my Son, for your soul cannot be saved,” Brian advised in a pious tone.
“Those are great costumes,” Julian told him. “You two look like the real thing.”
“That’s the point,” Brittany chastised. “We do want to win, you know.”
“And win we will!” Brian added, waving his finger in the air for emphasis.
“Ah, the epic battle between good and evil,” Julian remarked, looking around the room. “Just to be fair I should warn you that I possess supernatural powers.”
“Yes my son, but we have the will of God on our side!”
Laughing, Julian shook his head at Brian. “Be sure to remember that when you go to confession this Sunday. I’m sure that God will be interested to know that you blasphemed his good name while getting thoroughly fucked up at a party in his adversary’s honor.”
“You’re not getting theological on me, are you?” Brian asked, once again assuming a pious tone.
“No, I don’t think that’s something you’ll need to worry about. I’m not a religious man.”
Just then he turned his head and noticed someone across the room. She was dressed as a Greek Goddess and wore a white dress with gold sandals laced up to her knees. Her dress had a cloak that draped across both shoulders, then flowed down her back to the floor, and her hair was pulled up in a twist so that the blonde curls fell haphazardly to frame her delicate features. She even added a wreath of leaves to her hair to give the costume that final touch.
“Excuse me,” Julian said, brushing Brian aside. Angrily he walked over to where the young Goddess was standing and put his hand to her shoulder, spinning her around to face him.
“Stefanie,” he barked. “What the Hell are you doing here? Didn’t I tell you that we weren’t going to see each other anymore?”
“Chill out, Julian,” she replied calmly. “I understand the new terms of our agreement. I happen to be here with a date.”
“Oh, sorry,” he apologized, letting go of her shoulder. “I just assumed...”
“What? That I’d be miserable without you. I don’t think so, Julian.”
Just then a young man wearing a short golden skirt with an armored breastplate and red cape joined them. He too wore golden sandals, however his outfit also included a sword and metal helmet. Handing Stefanie a glass of champagne, he gave Julian a wary look.
“Jason, darling....” Stefanie cooed. “This is Julian. He’s one of the family friends I was telling you about.”
“Nice to meet you,” He said, shaking Julian’s hand.
“Honored I’m sure,” Julian replied. “Well, if you’ll both excuse me, I need to get back to my friends.”
“Speaking of your friends, where is the girlfriend of yours I’ve heard so much about?” Stefanie asked. Although her words were sweet, her tone seemed bitter and sarcastic. Julian could even see the jealousy burning behind her eyes.
“Jessica had to work, but she’ll be here later. Nice to see you again, Stefanie.”
“Once again,” she answered. “The pleasure was all yours.”
After a few hours, Julian was becoming tired of the watered down drinks and the DJ’s choice of dance music. Brian and Brittany were off dancing with each other, and Julian sat at the table alone, drinking one glass of dark red wine after another. Stefanie was out on the dance floor too, and was making quite the spectacle of herself with her new dance partner. Julian could see through her pathetic plan to make him jealous. He couldn’t believe that he had been under her spell for so long. How glad he was that Jessica had finally helped him to see the light. Julian missed Jessica, and was starting to wonder why she hadn’t shown up yet. Her shift had ended a few hours ago, yet she still hadn’t arrived at the party. He was just about to go look for her, when he saw her walk in the door. She was dressed in a long blue velvet gown that followed the curves of her body tightly to her hips then gently flared to the floor. The sleeves of the dress were also long and flared at the wrists giving the gown a medieval appearance. She had braided her long hair in an intricate design and wore a jeweled headband that brought out the shine in her dark eyes. Julian thought she was the most beautiful sight he had ever seen. Quickly, he got up from the table and made his way over to where she was standing, taking her hand in his.
“My beautiful Lady,” he smiled, pouring on the charm. “May I have this dance?”
“Why certainly my Nocturnal friend.”
As they danced slowly around the dance floor, Julian gazed intently into her dark eyes. “You are so beautiful, “ he told her. “I was so afraid you weren’t going to come, and then I looked up and there you were. You were like a vision.”
Blushing, Jessica looked up at him seductively. “You make a very sexy Vampire.”
Reaching out, Julian brought her wrist up to his mouth and kissed her tenderly. “I can give you eternal love with just one of my deep kisses,” he whispered playfully, kissing her wrist again.
Laughing, Jessica threw her head back, revealing her delicate neck. “So kiss me if you will, my dark knight.”
Leaning down, Julian kissed her playfully on the neck, biting her gently with his porcelain fangs. Moving upwards, he continued to kiss her, moving his lips closer to her own until they met in a passionate embrace. Just then he felt someone bump into them, and looked up quickly to see Stefanie and her date dancing next to them.
“Oh, I’m sorry,” she cooed. “Did I bump into you?”
“Piss Off,” Julian said, taking Jessica by the hand. “Come on, Jessica let’s go get a drink.” Angrily he shot a cold glance at Stefanie. “I’m sure it’s a lot safer at the bar.”
Chuckling, Stefanie looked at the two of them. “For whom?”
“Bite me,” he told her, grabbing Jessica’s hand and dragging her off the dance floor.
“Oh no, Julian,” she called out after him. “Bite me.”
Once they were away from the dance floor, Julian let go of Jessica’s wrist. “Who was that?” she asked.
“No one,” he told her. “No one at all.”
Nodding her head, Jessica looked out at the girl on the dance floor and then back at Julian. “Okay, well why don’t we go get something to drink. I think I could use one right about now anyway.”
“That’s probably a good idea,” Julian smiled at her, letting the anger subside. “I’m so glad you’re here tonight Jessica.”
“Me too,” she smiled.
The weekend of Halloween eventually faded into the background of his memory, and Julian became more consumed with the day to day concerns of the school year and the upcoming Holiday season. The past few months had passed so quickly for Julian that the first term of school had ended before he’d really had a chance to enjoy it.
Julian sat alone in his room, looking out over the pond. The lush trees that once surrounded it were barren, giving the pond a haunting appearance. He wondered how much time he had until the first snowfall.
Julian also thought about his parents, how he dreaded going home this year. It was always the same; all four families would get together for a festive dinner party, then as soon as the meal was over, they would start in on him. When they weren't talking about the company, they were complaining about him.
"I don't know why I do it," Julian muttered to himself, his gaze growing more intent. Standing, he lifted his glass of rum to the window.
"A toast," he said. "A toast to the great Monet family. May it lay in the hell it makes for others." He finished the liquor with a final gulp and dropped the glass to the floor. Why were things always so hard for him?
Just then, a familiar figure appeared below, and Julian watched as Jessica hurried across the road. When the doorbell rang, Julian turned and left the room, trying to leave the bitterness behind him. He could not let her see him like this.
Jessica hurried in, careful not to let out the heat, and greeted Julian with a quick kiss. "I thought for sure you'd be asleep, it's early yet," she confessed, setting her coat down on the sofa. "I decided to get some work done before it got too late."
"You work too much, Julian."
Julian's gaze rested upon the statue of the pirate ship. "I guess I'm too much like my old man." "What's wrong, Julian?"
"Nothing."
"Are you sure?" she asked, putting her arm around his waist. "I brought the information you needed."
"Great, thanks! Give me a sec, and I'll got get my stuff."
"I'll move everything onto the table. It will probably be easier to work there."
"Actually, I do better work in the bedroom," Julian teased, blowing her a kiss.
"Oh, go get your files!" she laughed.
Julian and Jessica sat together at the dining room table, leafing through articles and drinking coffee. Julian was feeling much better, and had even begun to hum a tune from "Oklahoma". Jessica began to hum along with him, and suddenly they found themselves singing. Dancing around the apartment, they burst into chorus.
"O K L A H O M A, Oklahoma!" Together, they fell onto the couch, giggling until both were out of breath.
"My life as a musical," Jessica sighed. "I didn't know singing could be so much fun."
"Obviously you've never sung with me," Julian winked.
Once they had settled down, Julian and Jessica curled up on the sofa, watching an old Carey Grant film.
"You know, Julian," Jessica added thoughtfully. "I would really like it if you would join me for Thanksgiving. My parents are always bugging me to bring somebody home. It would be a lot of fun."
Julian watched Jessica as she spoke. Her eyes lit up whenever she was excited about something. And this was something Julian never expected, for it was a chance to meet her family. Not to mention avoiding his own.
"I'd love to go, Jess. Thanks for inviting me."
"Great!" Jessica exclaimed, hugging him. "I just know my parents will love you!"
A few weeks later, Julian was loading his baggage into the trunk of his Corvette, making sure that everything was set before they left for the airport. Jessica came down the steps carrying the last of the luggage, and tossed Julian the key. "I'll run in and do a final check," he told her, unlocking the door and allowing her to slide comfortably into her seat. "Anybody have to go to the bathroom?"
"Cute, Julian," Jessica smiled and shook her head. "Hurry up! Our flight leaves in an hour!"
An hour later, Julian and Jessica found themselves seated comfortably on the flight to New Hampshire. Tomorrow was Thanksgiving and they would be staying until Sunday. Three days with the Taylor family, Julian thought. I just hope they aren't anything like mine!
Soon the plane had taxied down the runway preparing for take off. As it began it's ascent into the air, Jessica looked over at Julian and rolled her eyes jokingly.
"Home sweet home," she chimed, as the plane climbed into the morning sky.
In less than an hour, they were already descending into the Concord Airport, and taxing up to the terminal.
"Well, we made it without any major disasters," Jessica teased, restoring the deck of cards to her purse. "All factors considered, I'd say this was a safe, yet boring, flight."
"Are you always this cheerful?" Julian smiled, hoping that this weekend would go well. Passengers began exiting the plane, and Julian grabbed their baggage, following Jessica down the aisle. "Here goes nothing," he muttered, already nervous about meeting her family.
"Do I detect a hint of doubt in your voice, Jules? You, my dear are about to embark on the adventure of a lifetime."
"Oh, really? And what could that be?"
"My family."
