Combustion EngineA Poem by Maddie ReissWe were broken generators A fiery charge we tried To mechanize To normalize. Greasing every corroded gear. A force ignited, like the combustion engine Of a ’96 Ford that carried me in a vessel Up two hours of Turnpike. Underneath overpasses--manmade monuments. We were star-crossed, like the romantics say A match that wouldn’t burn so slowly It oxidized Then fossilized Antiquated with the coming year. It was gritty, like the inner workings Of a ’96 Ford that carried me in a vessel Down two hours of Turnpike. Over rivers and around mountains--changing air pressure. We had more voltage then that car battery A perfect balance of electrons When polarized We paralyzed Shockwaves to the atmosphere. I’d like to think that we sent such energy Rocketing through the universe in a vessel, And for a time, there was nirvana. I drove back through a new dimension--time renewed itself. © 2015 Maddie ReissAuthor's Note
