Open Eyes Will See

Open Eyes Will See

A Poem by Maddie Reiss
"

Just beginning to get back into poetry. Still exploring styles and trying to find my voice.

"

I close my eyes to see images in greyscale

Then open, dilated in the dark

God led me by the hand, blindly through black valleys

The snakes bit at my heels, by His will then--

he left me perforated, I used mud to stop the bleeding.

When I asked “why?” they only told me that--

faith will save me from eternal fires

But I know that hell’s rivers run cold.

I want to close my eyes and see all life’s captured moments

Tuck the good ones in the pocket above my heart

Selectively recall each memory through a slow exposure

Playback, delete, then rewind a force already in motion--

lead myself through the darkness, and trample venom under foot.

They told me then, you see each moment before you vanish--

and that a woman couldn’t kill a snake

But I know better than to wait a lifetime for an instant

Or for Adam to suck the poison.

I like a voice that has immediately taken charge of the audience with the timbre of the words and the delivery of them. I was spellbound by your poem and waited till the end to go refill ny coffee cup. Now, that is something that does not happen often.

These lines were my favorite from my male point of view! Keep writing! I'll keep reading!

Wow! Great poem I loved the snake metaphor carried on throughout it. Great Job!

There is definitely a voice in there struggling to rise through your hesitations, striving for the light of day.
Please keep sharing your inspirations and insights, dear poet.
