Chapter 1 – Pop Quiz

When we moved out of New York I took up the habit of listening to music twenty four seven. Eventually I memorized all the songs on my ipod and they just started playing at random in my head. Typically they relate to what I’m currently doing or feeling. Unusual, I know!

Also after the move my mom started drinking. Again, twenty four seven, and because of this, she isn’t very fun to be around when she wakes up in the morning with a splitting headache. So, as another habit I picked up, I have started running every morning, just before she gets up so I can be out of the house for the first few moments of her hangover.

This morning was like no other. I ran around the block, past the neighbor’s houses and up the steps of my house. I was in a particularly happy mood this morning because I hadn’t stayed up late the night before, chatting on AIM with my friends, as usual. You’ll begin to notice that after the move I picked up a number of habits. So as I open the bright red door to our house A & E by Goldfrapp starts playing through my head.

I start dancing around, and I might mention, banged into the walls of our very narrow hallway, spinning my way over to the fridge and grab my mom’s latest note off of it.

She leaves random notes for me every morning, which she writes while she is drunk, making most of them illegible. I don’t even try to read them any more, so I grab the annual note and throw it in the trash before taking a can of coke out from the fridge. (Another bad habit)

I quickly realized that my mom, (thank the lord), wasn’t up yet, so I grabbed my book bag off the counter and bolted for the door as fast as I could.

The song fiery crash by Andrew Bird, (brilliant artist) starts playing in my head after A&E ends. I walk on the edge of the sidewalk with my arms out stretched. I knew I was going to be late for school, but as usual, I don’t care!

As I reach school the song ends and up starts Car Crash by Matt Nathanson. I take one look at my school and think to my self, “I could run home now and face ditzy mom or I can walk in as the bell rings and face the wrath of my first period biology teacher Mr. Callahan.” I decide school would be better then going home now, so I walk in, and guess what! The bell rings.
