Chapter 5 –

Dark Come Soon by Tegan and Sarah played through my head as I wandered the streets of New York around and around. Every thing is so familiar but so different.

I turned the corner and there was a large ditch in the ground, inside it was trucks building some sort of building. I then realized where I was.

I hadn’t been back since September 11, 2001. The song changed to world spins madly on by the Weepies. The same song that played from my headphones the day I found out my dad was dead.

I stayed only long enough to imprint the image of it in my mind. I needed to get out of there, but it wasn’t something I wanted to forget.

I headed south, down 42nd street to my favorite café, Cafe L’Amore, or Coffee Love, for those of you who don’t speak French.

I stepped through the bright green door, and it was like I had stepped back in time. Everything was the same as it had been the last time I was hear. My dad was even sitting at our table…

WAIT! “Daddy?” The word hadn’t even reached my mouth before I knew it to be true. I rushed up to the table.

“Dad! I though you were dead! Where have you been! Why didn’t you come find us?” I looked around and realized he wasn’t the only one at the table.

“Wait, whose this?” I asked, panic rising in my voice.

“Maggie! Um…” He couldn’t finish the sentence before she, the woman he was with, answered for him. “I am Lydia. HIS,” extenuating the word, “wife.”

“No! You can’t be! He’s already married!” I hadn’t realized it but I was screaming and my dad was trying to hush me up the same way my mom had only a day before.

“Max?” She gave my dad a hard stare. At that moment a little girl pushed past me to sit next to Lydia.

“Whose that?” The words barely were able to make it out of my mouth. I already new the answer though. My dad hadn’t come back that day for a reason. He probably didn’t even go into work that day, because the girl sitting at the table was well over the age of 8, meaning she was born before the towers crashed.

“Hold on, hold on!” My dad screamed. By this point we had the entire restaurants attention. “Let me start by saying sorry in advance because I know I am about to have a lot of angry women in my life.”
