Battle Scars

Battle Scars

A Poem by Matt Sayer

Rivulets of red,
Like tears from crying veins,
Seek freedom from my charred black heart,
My life leaves crimson stains.

A kindled fire that once drew close
Our bodies, curled as one,
Now funeral flame lies twixt our souls,
The heat-death of our sun.

Smiles and joy lost between scars,
The signature of our war,
Your bayonet lips, your machine-gun mouth,
This dead man loves no more.

"Smiles and joy lost between scars, the signature of our war. Your bayonet lips, your machine-gun mouth, this dead man loves no more." So dramatic, the closing stage of a love that once was great and untainted without doubt can be brutal, with vicious words firing at one another like bullets meant to kill. Very striking indeed, it's brill.
