Battle Scars

Battle Scars

A Poem by Matt Sayer

Rivulets of red,
Like tears from crying veins,
Seek freedom from my charred black heart,
My life leaves crimson stains.

A kindled fire that once drew close
Our bodies, curled as one,
Now funeral flame lies twixt our souls,
The heat-death of our sun.

Smiles and joy lost between scars,
The signature of our war,
Your bayonet lips, your machine-gun mouth,
This dead man loves no more.

"Smiles and joy lost between scars, the signature of our war. Your bayonet lips, your machine-gun mouth, this dead man loves no more." So dramatic, the closing stage of a love that once was great and untainted without doubt can be brutal, with vicious words firing at one another like bullets meant to kill. Very striking indeed, it's brill.

No worries, Matt :)
A gripping heartache described to perfection.
To experience love and loss like this is painful, but not as painful as having to let go.
Well written.

Thanks Daniel! :)
I love this poem. It has a strength of anger, angst and bitterness to it, expressed in perfect simile and metaphor throughout. That second stanza is superb in it's entirety, and I think the line "your bayonet lips, your machine-gun mouth" is a gut buster. The death of a relationship, vividly described. Justine
