New York at Nine

New York at Nine

A Poem by M. Chary
"

I articulate a sense of alienation or dissociation at witnessing the city's independence from me.

"

 New York at Nine

In my dark hallway

I gaze at a reddening sun

After a rain and some calm

Train tracks recede into a falling sun

Music blares from a laconic speaker to deadened faces next door

It follows me past the balcony

To the landing where it rains

I wish you were here

Stories into a pink sky

And the tap of tardy rain

Much as lights and governed clouds pattern our chaos

Streetlights at dusk shade the world

Race with the passing train

Sail through the ghosts on my balcony

The red light fades behind a rusted water tower

Soon other lights will have a purpose

And they will seem less absurd

As night falls

Apartments unwittingly play tic-tac-toe

A sadness creeps into me

Over this contenting beauty

I can only witness
