When I look back on my childhood, I never really had one
thing in particular that I enjoyed more than other things. I just took things as they came, received gifts
graciously, and really enjoyed giving to people more than getting. The only things that have really stuck with
me my whole life are my comic books. I
have always preferred comics over real books.
I never really enjoyed stories that just took their time and hurt your
hands when you turned the page. I have
only enjoyed a few real books in the course of my life, and Harry Potter is definitely
not one of them. I always enjoyed
looking at the art that was used in comics, due to the creativity and absolute
stunning beauty that they held, and alongside that, they also told great
stories. They always had something new
to offer each time you read them. A
small character design you might not have noticed before, a style of drawing
that occurs more often than not that you realize is characteristic to the
artist. Comics while not considered by
many to be forms of art or worthwhile to society, they still have a huge impact
on our lives today. How many of the
great modern summer blockbusters have been based off of comic book heroes or characters? How many different characters from video
games have been inspired by the design of comic book characters? How many different worlds have been inspired
and dreamed up because a famous drawing by Steve Ditko stuck with us since we
were a child? One of my favorite cartoon
strips once had a picture of an old superman in the middle of Times Square
holding up comics telling the people that comic books are books, art, and
graphic design, and complains that nobody is listening to him. Comics are dying out, and we need to find a
way to bring them back. It was a part of
so many people’s childhoods, and it could still be a part of the childhoods of
future generations, unless people continue to turn a blind eye towards the type
of book that invented Superman.
