The decline of friendship

The decline of friendship

A Poem by M J Hutton

 Damage,

Irreparable damage.

Damage to our friendship

Damage to our future

Lives –

Damage.

Behaviour and motions

That will change our

Perceptions, of the people

We were,

To the person we may

One day become –

Damage.

Behaviour,

Behaviour that shatters

Behaviour that upends

Behaviour that eradicates

The confidence, trust and

Serenity that has taken

Years to construct, build

And strengthen,

Behaviour that annuls this

In one swift deciding phrase

Damage,

For you and a once

Precious friend….

Using their weaknesses

During a petty, trivial row,

Exposing their secrets

That you alone know,

For you was a shoulder

A prized confidant

A tower of support

During their times of turmoil,

Once inseparable

Now defunct

You never ever believed

It could come to this.

The fifteenth repair of

The puncture, the glass vase

Dropped and shattered,

The wing of the crane fly

Plucked, the soft balsa wood

Snapped –

Damage,

Damage beyond repair….

Actions,

Actions that undermine,

Actions that indicate a lack

Of respect

Actions that reveal a lack

Of sense, a complete

Disregard for the person

You once called a friend,

These are emotions

That can never be rebuilt,

They are never easily replaced

Are as thinly divided

As a sharp knife blade,

When apologizes are redundant

Expressions are dead

You can never reconstruct

The bond of a friend –

If the damage is piercing

If the damage id direct

The damage is destructive

In the decline of a friend….
