The rivers are silent tonight

The rivers are silent tonight

A Poem by M J Hutton

 The Thames is silent tonight

As if in mourning

At the passing

Of our once perfect

Romance –

The rivers are silent tonight.

The Avon is still tonight

In deep reflection

At the painful annulment

Of our once glorious

Love affair –

The rivers are still tonight.

The Medway is quiet tonight

Gently escorting, a collection

Of dead leafs,

Cast from trees that was

Once thick and productive,

And like our emotions

Will never resurface –

The rivers are silent tonight.

The Mersey is silent tonight

Boats and tugs

Have slowed –

They carve through the water

At a timid one knot –

The crews and passengers

All salute,

The peaceful passing of

Our eroded love story –

The rivers are silent tonight.

The Clyde is restful tonight

Its tides are singing

Beautifully in time,

A polyphonic harmony

A lament for our

Decline –

The rivers are silent tonight.

Well done M J Hutton! I really enjoyed this peace. It really brought up clear pictures in my head. The way you ended each stanza, with the same line. It was beautiful!
