Love in a hostile climate

Love in a hostile climate

A Poem by M J Hutton

 Strained eyes,

Struggling in the dim light

Flickering in a dense darkness

Contained by the closed curtains.

I awake with her beside me

The dew of morning

Evaporates into the grey

Bleak cosmetics of

The concrete forest.

I feel her sigh in her sleep

Her sweet breath is as warm

As heated honey, soothing

My overwhelmed flesh, that

Admires in awe, the silken

Embers of her luxurious

Woven skin.

This abode of mine

This council rented gaff, of

Noise and thin walls

Is a palace while she’s here

A tabernacle of treasure

While my parents are away –

And we are safe –

In my towers.

The hounds of scum,

My enemies and foes

Circle outside, jealous of the

Solace my beauty provides…

One day she will be gone

Back to her background and

Class, of this I am sure

But for now,

I don’t care…

Because hope without ambition

Will never avail,

Dreams without direction

Are destined to fail,

Love in a hostile climate

Can never prevail.
