Night Song

Night Song

A Poem by M J Hutton

I peer long at the constellations

And the Great Bear stares back

From the dense opaque darkness

Commonly known as the night.

Each star within the Great Bear’s

Celestial claw circle shines

And glistens, like a sparkler in a

Tomb, awaiting its final flame.

Far in the East, Aurora sleeps

Her charm and beauty succumbed

To slumber, and as I sit

Under the forlorn shadow of man

The evening breeze wraps its arms

Around the still ivy…

I am still and motionless, in the glow

Of the grandiose alpha moon

The streets outside have fallen silent,

These are the seconds within our lives

That is worth more than any currency

Moments that sooth, stroke and ease

The memories that ache deep in the heart.

Through the small open window

Faint voices and laughter arise,

From the near by public house,

I place my head on the pillow

And let my heavy eyelids collapse.
