Reflections

A Poem by M J Hutton

 April, it’s snowing.

Not just a minor freak but,

A blast of a storm.

Flakes as big as asteroids

Cover the memory

Of Jesus and his Easter death.

I’m beginning to realise,

That we don’t have to forget our friends

To forget ourselves.

We move on.

They change. I’ve changed.

Evolution is a redundant process

When we live our lives,

Through memories.

The cars outside,

Move heavily through the snow.

I’m cold from the heart down.

I’ve forgiven my enemies,

Have they forgiven me?

With every new day, I think

About her more.

While I listen to the old men

At the back of the bar, singing

Romantic lullabies from,

The second world war.

Drunkenly, of course.

Everybody could’ve been a pro.

Everyone was offered a football trial.

Everybody could’ve been a contender.

Everyone could’ve been anything apart from

Themselves. They are more afraid of looking

Themselves in the eye,

Than of death.

We move slowly to the rhythm, slightly

Out of time. We pray weekly to the heavens

For a better change in life.

If I wipe away a child’s tear,

Then who will wipe mine?
