Rootless

Rootless

A Poem by Indra's Child

ROOTLESS

Rootless
How can I stand, when my feet are missing?
Ruthless

To wander around finding my bearings
Clueless

As to where I belong in this world,
Rootless
Starving from lack of something...
In my veins?
Rootless
Never had a community to call my own
Rootless

I was picked up and moved town to town
Irish?
"You're Native American,"
Cherokee?
"You're too Irish,"
American?
"You're too third culture,"
Mexican? Guatemalan?! Peruvian??! ECUADORIAN???!!!
"You're too white,"
White?
"You're too cultured."
Diverse?
I can't claim that...
"Family?"
None who I know..
"Friends?"
Acquaintances and closer acquaintances.

I'm Rootless
No blood in my veins that dictates my fate
That's an illusion

To be thinking that matters anyway
But I'm Rootless

I've got no culture that I'm sure I could play
Without being intrusive

But I carry them in my soul and maybe one day,
I'll be able to express it
Without being pressed for it
Until then, I'll remain

With no real connection
Running away from anyone who wants me to play as
Just one part of the game

When it isn't a game
But I can't with certainty say
That when it ends,

             I won't be

         Rootless

Anymore

...

Some people really need an understanding of their roots to make their lives meaningful. I can't imagine how that would be if you felt you didn't belong, you didn't fit in. I just wish that people were treated as people and accepted without having to delve into stuff which should be of no concern. When will we accept our fellow earth dwellers without allocating boxes for them? Don't be rootless. Just be you. First of yours I have read fir quite some time. What happened to the pancakes?
