Chapter 1
Me and my twin sister, Ayla were running for our lives. Oh, sorry! No proper introduction! My name is Hope. I have sharp, green, piercing eyes, and wavy red hair (natural, mind you!). Ayla had sky blue eyes, but everything else about me was true about her. Our family moved to Tokyo after our parents got divorced. Our Dad took us to Tokyo to "start fresh", but I am sure he is just looking for another wife. Anyway, me and Ayala were swimming in the ocean while our Dad was doing business somewhere. He left us alone because he thought we were responsible 13 year olds. And he wasn't wrong, but not even a responsible 40 year old could be prepared for what happened next! Anyway, we just had gone swimming when BOOM! An earthquake shook the ground. At first it was weak, then became stronger. A building fell down while we were in the water. The building didn't hurt us in any way, but it did hurt a lot of other people. Their screams died out quickly as the tons and tons of brick fell on top of them. Ayla looked at me with panicked eyes. Now, the only difference between me and Ayla ,other than our eyes, is that Ayla was a nice know-it-all. Ayla wasn't and isn't a Miss Goodie Two Shoes, or a teacher's pet. She just read a lot and knew a lot of things. Another deep tremble shook the ground and the ocean. To me, it sounded like a deep burp. Many other buildings fell near us and into the water.
"Tsunami!" Ayla whispered. We bolted out of the water, the very hot summer heat drying the water off quickly. We hastily climbed through the wreckage and dead bodies. Not the time to cry now Hope! Not the time. My patient side told me. RUN FOR MY LIFE! My panicked side told me. I ignored the panicked side and tried to be calm as Ayla and I picked through the stinky bodies and sharp pieces of wood, plastic, and brick. I trembled hard. "GET OUT OF THE WATER!!" We screamed at the people still swimming. I glanced in the distance, towards the rest of the ocean. What I saw made me grip Ayla's arm. Hard. There was a huge tower of water shooting towards us. It was at least 80 feet tall, from what I could tell! I ran inland, Ayla close behind me. I then made a mistake. I ran into a huge crowd of people, even bigger than the crowds of people bustling on the sidewalk, screaming, shouting, and crying in fear. I risked a look behind me and saw no one I could recognize. Ayla wasn't there. I stopped abruptly. "Ayla!" I screamed and repeated. "Ayla!" Out of the corner of my eye I saw a shadow in an alley. "Ayla?!" I called hopefully. Ayla's sweet little head peeked out. "Oh Ayla!" I kissed her on the cheek and hugged her. "Come on Ayla, lets get moving!" We ran as fast as we could, holding hands, away from the ocean. I glanced back and saw that the monster tsunami was already halfway to us! I didn't know that tsunami's could go so fast, because I had never experienced one (duh)! I poured on the speed, and since we were holding hands, Ayla was forced to do the same. As I looked left and right for cars coming, I saw a sign that made me want to choke and give up. It said: NUCLEAR PLANT - 1 MILE RIGHT. But I wasn't called Hope for nothing. I yelled and gave one last burst of speed. Since it was so sudden, Ayla dragged behind me. I found an empty bus, completely abandoned, with a gold glint near the driver's wheel. I steered Ayla towards it and hopped in. "Hey what are you doing! The driver is gone!" Ayla shouted towards me as she hesitated at the door. "I am going to drive! I've watched Mom and Dad plenty of times!" I shouted back. Ayla turned towards the nearest person and twirled her finger on the side of her head, but hopped in as she the alarming speed of the freak wave. I checked to see if the gold glint was what I thought it was, and it was. I turned the golden key and the engine purred like a kitten. I switched gear to drive and stepped on the pedal as hard as I could. I turned the wheel and drove inland as fast as I could, still being careful of passing cars and people. When I looked at the mirror on the roof of the bus, I saw Ayla's eyes wide and her mouth open. I considered being proud of myself, but we weren't out of danger yet. I looked at the rear view mirror and saw the tsunami close on our tail, and we haven't even driven a mile! I then heard a large crash, creak, and splash to my right. I looked there and saw a green cloud of smoke coming towards us. I tried to drive faster, but all of the traffic slowed us down significantly. "RADIATION!! MY GOD, HOPE WE ARE GOING TO DIE!!!" Ayla screamed. I looked at her, but that was a mistake. Luckily, my foot loosened up a bit on the pedal, just as a building fell down right in front of the bus. "Look, Ayla," I gritted my teeth as I talked, concentrating on the road, as I had learned from my mistake before. "The radiation is not here yet. Close all of the windows tightly and, I think I see duct tape in the shelf there, yes there Ayla, use it to duct tape the windows and corners of the door. Thanks!" Ayla followed my instructions hastily while I drove. I saw a big field ahead filled with people without cars running away from the radiation and inland at the same time. The field had a few fences that looked like got trampled by cows and bulls trying to get out. It was green and grassy, in some places with tall weeds. I beeped the horn as I tried to drive through the crowd. All of the people in front of me protected their ears with their hands and banged on the door, wanting and screaming for me to let them in. But I couldn't. There was no time. I beeped the horn again just when Ayla called out, "Hey Hope! Look what I found. I promise not to load it now, but I will keep it for now for protection in the future, just in case." I quickly glanced behind me and saw Ayla holding a pistol and 3 magazines of ammo. I nodded slowly as I put my eyes back on the road. Ayla stuffed it into her swimming suit pocket, which I have never understood why Ayla wore, as it made no sense, but Ayla always said, "Don't worry! This style of fashion is intelligent, useful, and does not interfere with your comfort or swimming. Plus, the pocket zips closed, so anything you hold in there will not get wet or even damp as it is made of water proof cloth. Don't worry, it will soon catch on!" I then, looked behind me to see where the 2 dangers were. That was my mistake. I drove when- CREAK! SPLASH! I drove straight into a deep lake. I jumped up from the driver's seat and looked at the door. I knew that if Ayla and I tried to go out the door, it would be to late to go out because we would have to get rid of the strong, gray, duct tape. I desperately looked around the sinking bus. "Ayla! The window." I said. We both ran to the nearest one. "Oh no! I forgot I told you to tape the windows too!" I said, gasping for breath. Another strong quake rocked the earth. I looked out the window and saw that a lake overturn was about to happen. With the bus still in the process of sinking, and Ayla and I in the bus, that was not good. Ayla dropped to her knees, her knees just gave up on her. Her hand fell onto her pocket. She fingered the outline of the lethal weapon, then stood up again. She quavered as she un zipped her pocket and took out the gun. "Hope, cover your head, swim fast and strong, and be careful of the broken glass." Ayla said. Ayla shot the window and ice cold water came pouring in. Ayla and I swam through it unscathed, but a sharp piece of glass zipped right passed my head once while I was swimming. Our heads poked up and out of the lake and I opened my eyes. A bright flash of green met them. I squinted and I saw that the poisonous fog was upon us. "Ayla don't breathe!" I screamed. But it was too late. My scream took air and the air went straight into my body. I swam to shore with Ayla close behind me. I looked back at her and found her cherry red lips opening her mouth. "Ayla what are you doing! Are you crazy!" I shouted at her. "Don't worry. If you're going, I'm going too." Ayla took a deep breath. I shook my head. "Hey where is the tsunami?" Ayla asked. I looked behind me and saw the enormous tsunami a few yards away. I grabbed Ayla's hand and dug my long, lime green, nails into her soft hand. My nails were chipped and covered in dirt and grime. Ayla didn't even complain. I turned and ran inland. We reached the edge of the field, sometimes Ayla dragging me when I was out of breath, sometimes me pulling Ayla. We worked like a team we've never worked like before. We crawled through the fallen buildings, scraping the palms of our hands and the wind blowing our long hair that reached the small of our back. We ran into the rest of the town a bit when we reached a big fence. We didn't have time to go all the way around the fence, or to climb it. I hopelessly looked left and right. I saw a very unusual tree to the right. It was very thick at the base of the trunk, thin in the middle, and thick at the top of the trunk and the branches. I let go of Ayla's hand and hopped on a stone at the bottom of the tree and jumped on the tree and hugged the middle of the tall tree. I'm scared of heights and trust me, even only the middle of the strange tree was high. I started sweating even harder. I wrapped my legs tightly around the trunk and took a loose part of my swimsuit. I tied it around the trunk. Amazingly, I did all of that in only a few seconds. Ayla copied me and did it in even less time than me. I held out my hands and held onto Ayla's hands tightly. "Please God!" I prayed. I looked at the oncoming wave of terror and whispered, "Oh God!" I felt streams of tears. I Then the wave came with a terrifying CRASH! © 2014 lydieAuthor's Note
