LET GO

you cannot hold on forever

why are we depressed

 when we don’t have

  to be

    to be anything at all except

     ourselves

      flailing along in the rapids

       in the river that is

        our lives

                  forever moving

         don’t try to fight back

          failing attempts to stay

           above water at all times only to lead to

 disappointment

    a sadness we feed ourselves through

     impossible expectations

             if we just let go

              of the rock we’re grabbing in the

                          lame attempt

               to hold still

                in the frenzied water

                 we’d stop wasting

                  wasting in the

                   same place

                    a place of

                     hollow

                      determination

 

           a life neither above

                          nor

                   below water

              

                              let go

I love structure you use here. It really helps me feel what you're saying. For me it brings up a sense of calm urgency or something...the way it tapers down to emphasize your last few lines.

I like how the final thought of this poem is to go with the flow. Too many times people fight against what they cannot change in their lives. I am guilty of going against uncontrollable external forces and an say with certainty that once I began to accept change, all the stress goes away.
