The Sound of Swimming

The Sound of Swimming

A Poem by Mary

Thump, thump

My heart beats,

Adrenalin pumps through my veins

Making my head go dizzy

Beep, beep

I hear the loud cry

Of the Starting bell

My hands find the block

I pull myself on

BEEP!

The sound I’ve been waiting for,

I launch myself into a dive

I’m vaguely aware of the icy water encasing my body

Splash, splash

I make waves

As my body moves as fast it can possibly go,

I forget all technique

Only time matters

Tick, tick

I can almost hear the stopwatch

With every

Second,

Heartbeat,

Breath,

I draw nearing to the finish

BANG!

My hand grazes the wall,

My body stops mid-stroke

And I breathe,

Finally able to feel again

Drip, drip

I unconsciously pull myself from the pool

My body a spray of water

No time to dry off,

No I must look for my time

Screaming Cheers

I hear the crowd

Is that my name they are cheering?

I don’t understand

Then I see my coach,

His smile brakes through my mental fog.

Gasp!

I’ve won.

This is perfect; don't apologize. You have captured the swim meet, perfectly. I hope that this is true and the winner was you. If not, you won with the poem. It's beautiful.
