Behind the Eyes

Behind the Eyes

A Poem by Mary
"

something for a contest

"

You stare at the girl in the mirror.

Who could she be?

You take in her appearance,

Big brown eyes, pale skin, and interesting hair.

You don’t know what to make of her.

You know her favorite hobbies and her favorite food.

But what is that sadness that lurks there?

What made that girl cry,

What took that spark away?

You decide that the world has molded her and tainted her,

She is no longer pure.

She knows sick truths and many lies.

You now know what lurks beneath those brown eyes.

You cry with her and show her the light.

And to your delight,

Old wounds heal and she begins to grow.

But she didn’t forget

Things she once knew, before she grew.

And sometimes when no one is around,

She falls to the ground and cries for the broken world that she used to know.

This is great, Mary! I love poems that encourage people to take a second look at the very things they take for granted. This one reminds of a poem I once wrote about a similar girl and what lurked behind HER eyes. Thanks for bringing a smile to my face with this one. -e
ps - do YOU have brown eyes?
