Fairytales

Fairytales

A Poem by Sophie
"

sorry if I depress you...

"

The happy endings happen on the last page

because who knows what's Cinderella's real fate.

Is her pumpkin going to crash?

Is Prince Charming going to leave and never come back?

The author tries to give you hope,

but really, Eric dies on a burning boat.

Ever wonder why they are called fairytales?

Not because of the fairies or mermaids with shiny scales,

but because they're fair, unlike life,

and they end at a happy moment, free from strife

but if you could turn the page to see,

you'd realize Hercules hooked up with Aphrodite.

In the real world, filled with cities and cars,

instead of masked balls and wishes on stars,

we have murders and sadness and crimes,

and people who end their own lives.

From a young age we're taught to expect

to expect the perfect life we'll never get.

Snow White and the Prince will get divorced,

and split apart the poor seven dwarves.

Pocahontas actually didn't make it in time,

in all the history books it says John Smith died.

Mulan the heroine?

They killed her when they found out she was feminine.

Sleeping Beauty never awoke,

because Prince Phillip was abusive and caused her to choke.

Rapunzel was all a dream,

dreamt by a little girl who's cancer caused her to scream.

All the cubs were killed by Scar,

and Simba was picked apart by vultures from afar.

So maybe you're happy now, I hope it lasts,

but just remember, happiness never remains intact.

Sophie, I don't know what to say.

You have talent. It's evident. And while I am a lover of fairy tales, I do realize that life is nothing like them. Life is full of sadness, but whether we choose to live buried in that sadness is mostly our choice. If we want, we can make our lives a fairy tale, even if it's the crappiest fairy tale we've ever heard.

Again, you have serious talent. I'm talking MEGA talent, girl. :)

Sorry :( And your lucky you reviewed the edited version, the Mulan line was... well... not the best.
I don't like the repetition of "to expect to expect" it doesn't work but everything else does and I like that you takes so many tales and twist them into sadness. I think this may be the best thing of yours I've read Sophie and will happily rate it highly! The way it looks on the page is appealing and it's very realistic because we are shown great things and as you've said, expect them. Not hope, but expect because we are in a demanding society and everyone wants everything - so your message is clear and very good!
