A Chapter by Sophie

6

Dad arrives home in the middle of dinner.

“What happened, honey?” Mom asks as he pulls out a chair.

“Well, there was a kidnapping, and naturally, Guardian was called first. He obviously couldn't handle it, because when we arrived, he had the little girl, but he was bleeding heavily. Shot three times. I'll be surprised if we see him again. We collected samples of his blood and we're getting it tested to find out who it is.” At the last sentence I inhale some mashed potatoes and splutter endlessly. When I can finally breathe again I say, “Sorry, swallowed wrong.”

I can practically feel the disappointment coming off my parents in waves at their loser son, who is about to be found out as a super hero, well, at least I won't be a loser. Can you say that your parents found out you weren't a loser when they found out you were a super hero? No you can't, so beat that b*****s.

But they can't find out, what would happen if they did? Names are a very powerful thing, why do you think only Harry and Dumbledore said “Voldemort”? Well, three reasons, 1: Voldemort is sooo much fun to say, 2: because Dumbledore is fudging awesome, that's why, and 3: because they were more powerful than Voldemort.

After dinner, I text Devyn and tell her what's going to happen, and that I'll probably have to run away.

She doesn't reply.

Over the weekend, whenever dad's cell phone rings, I freeze up, terrified. I hear it downstairs on Sunday afternoon, talking I can't distinguish, and then a very loud, very clear, “WHAT?!” He doesn't come up and scream at me, I hear mom ask him what happen, and I creep to the edge of the stairs to listen.

“Someone stole the results before anyone could see them.” He explains. I deflate like a balloon, so happy.

There's a new girl in school, her name's Zoe. She's in almost all of my classes, and she's hot. Every single boy is lusting after her constantly, she's been asked out five times already. She has light blonde, wavy hair and piercing, smokey grey eyes.

In English, we're paired up o discuss something we've just read, and I'm paired with her. Every boy in the room shoots daggers at me.

“Hi,” She smiles, holding out her hand, “I'm Zoe.”

“I'm Ryan.” I say, taking her hand. She sits down in the desk next to me and we get to work. My hands are sweating like crazy and her eyes look like they're looking into my soul.

“So... I was thinking, this is kind of crazy, but do you want to go out after school? Maybe to the park?” She asks, looking embarrassed.

“I-I-I'd love to.” I gulp, “But I can't. I have to tutor Devyn.” I say. Her hands slide up my arm and she leans close to my ear, “C'mon, she'll be fine...”

“O-okay.” I say, her touch sends shivers down my spine.

The bell rings and I rush to Zoe's locker.

“Ready?” I ask.

“Totally.” She smiles, taking my hand. It takes all of my will power not to look down in shock. Guys glare at me as we walk through the hall and out of the school. As we walk out of the parking lot, something neon green catches my eye by the door. I look, Devyn stands there, looking confused, staring after me. I pretend not to notice as Zoe squeezes my hand and we walk toward the park.

“I had a lot of fun.” She says as we stand in front of her apartment.

“Me too.” I say. I lean down and tentatively kiss her.

“Call me.” She says, we'd already exchanged numbers. She goes inside. I pull out my phone and walk back to my apartment. I turn it on, three new text messages, all from Devyn.

Hey, detention or something?

...where r u?

I'll just go home.

“S**t.” I mutter, already dialing her number. “C'mon, pick up, pick up...” I mutter through the rings.

“Hi, you've reached Devyn Langston, I either can't come to the phone right now or I really just don't want to talk to you. I might call you back, bye!”

I hang up, not bothering to leave a message, but I call again. I'm back in my room on the seventh call when she finally picks up.

“What?” Is her greeting.

“Devyn, I'm sorry, I was-”

“On a date, I know. With Zoe, it's okay, I don't blame you. She's really pretty.”

“Yeah...” I sigh, and I practically hear her roll her eyes.

“Well, I still need to take out your stitches, can you come over?”

“Yeah, I'll be there in a minute.” We hang up and I fly to her apartment. She opens the window and I climb in. She starts with my shoulder and arm and then we come to the dilemma of my hip.

“Um, I'll just, take a blanket and, um, yeah.” I say, taking off my pants and underwear and covering myself with a blanket. She takes out the stitches and I redress awkwardly.

“So, I just got your text today, does your dad know now?” She asks, sitting on her bed.

“No, someone stole the results.” I say casually.

“Someone stole them?!” She splutters.

“Yeah, isn't it great?” I say.

“No! That could be really bad! It could be, like, someone who wants to kill you. How do you explain the monsters you fight on a regular basis?” She says, looking at me like I'm stupid.

“I... did not think of that.” I say, trying to come up with an excuse and failing. Miserably.

“You have to be careful, okay? I don't want you getting hurt.” She says, opening the window for me.

“I won't.” I say.

“I don't just mean by the monsters.” She says, but I've already jumped, and there's no time to ask questions.

Too much dialogue and not enough description. Try going back and adding more description. Otherwise, good job :)
