so he says

so he says

A Poem by Jessie Dana

"let it go, girl"
he said to me
"skip formality. fall in love"
now i'm bruised as i lie here
because of him i have no fear
"i look into your eyes"
he tells me
"babe, i can see your soul"
"it's an old one"
is my reply
older than he'll ever know
"will you be there" he asks me
"every day when i come home?"
"forever and always" i say to him
"forever and always, my love"

"i'll treat you right" he used to say
"all i have are these knots and you"
those were just words and promises
i wish he'd follow through
"i won't ever let you drown" he says
"you just mean too much to me"
isn't that the way it's supposed to go
isn't that how it should be

"everything will be alright"
he always said
"we'll be just fine, you and me
i got two jobs and i can pay the rent
we'll be fine"

his pictures are still on the wall
he's how i get by
his sweatshirts are the ones
i wear to bed at night
but maybe
it's time to say "goodbye"
