bird

bird

A Poem by L Ritter

clipped wings, tied down by strings
tearing its own feathers
to be free

not aware
the sad pain that it feels
when the feathers tear
to be free

but all of the sudden
as if out of the blue
the pain in its feathers
is in its heart too

and suddenly all
the pain its ever felt
comes rushing in waves
not letting itself out

bondage falls from its wings
free from its chains
it is free
but not free enough
to soar

it must carry the weight
of being caged too long
as it tries to fly
but falls to the ground

freedom is a burden
that weights on its feathers
it still feels the pain
from when it was in tethers

even being free
to the bird is the same
as being nailed to the ground
as being in chains
